Unhappy Service Engine Light is on!!

I know that has probably been posted before. I have a 2000 Chevy z71.
The service engine light came on last night. Noticed that the truck was idling a little rough. turned truck off. started back up. idling was ok. checked all the fluids this morning and made sure the gas cap was tight. Light still stayed on. Drives ok like there isn't anything wrong. Does anyone know what/how/where to look at error codes on this model of vehicle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thx

Re: Service Engine Light is on!!

With OBD2 you will need at least a code reader, but preferably a scan tool to pull the code. There is no such thing as dissconecting the battery to clear the codes anymore. Some of you chain type A/P stores will do this for you if you dont want to invest for one. So if you want to try this yourself start there, & post back with more info, like what code or codes were stored & details like mileage &
history. A common cause for this would be an injector poppet/nozzle dirty or starting to plug.A good practice would be to use an fuel detergent once or twice a year, dont over do it though. Your
GM dealer has equipment to clean these, it uses compressed nitrogen gas to pop the stuck poppets & from there a concetrated cleaner is used to remove deposits.
For the in tank cleaner use "TECHRON" or your dealer has the same product for twice the price.
Good luck.

Had the "service engine" light go off and on, intermittent, for a few weeks, then one morning, the truck would not start. The problem was a distributor cap that had corroded. Learned from internet searching and a call to GM that this is due to the air conditioner refrigerant piping located directly above the distributor cap. The condensate which develops on the line, dripping water, causing corrosion on the cap. Although the truck was out of warranty, GM decided to provide a 'good faith' replacement at the dealership for labor costs. Hope this helps....
