P0400 EGR mulfunction

My check engine yellow light on and local garage diagnose with P0400 which translate into EGR malfunction. I took the car to local part store and borrow the meter to clear the code. The code clear and light was off and never come back for about one week.

The garage quote me about $1000 for the job which replace the valve, two sensors. Is the price in the ballpark ? Labor is about $200. Parts are about $800.

Question:
Is the problem hiding somewhere and onboard computer can not detect ?
or it this just one time hiccup ?

Thanks for your help.

Do yourself a favor and check the BPT hose....it comes off the EGR valve up into a piece just above the engine toward the back.....usually those deteriorate because of heat and lead to an intermttent check engine light...small rubber vacuum hose...few bucks

I may have the same problem being the EGR valve's BPT hose...the Oxygen sensor and PVC valve was replaced 6 months ago...but it has some up again just yesterday. How do I find the EGR valve? It's kinda crowded in there. Not like my old 68 mustang were I can actually crawl into under the hood.

Re: P0400 EGR mulfunction

most of the time they just need cleaned out. carbon deposites break free from the intake manifold and get caught in the egr valve and sometimes lodges in the spring keeping the valve open. just take it off and clean it. if problem keeps coming back eigther get hotter spark plugs or remove intake and clean it. it really is a do it yourself job. if the gasket get torn on removal purchase a new one or use gasket making silicone.
