EGR elim. on 93 1.9L

Last year I converted my 92 ford escort lx 4dr into an enduro race car. Unfotunately the guy driving it blew up the engine. I just swapped in the new engine, but do not have the old egr parts to put back on the motor. I have welded up a plug to put into the exhaust manifold and cut a plate for the intake manifold side.

My concerns are that this will affect the a/f ratio on the vehicle due to the lesser air flow. Is there something else i need to do with this process or should i go find some used egr parts????????

Car idles a little high, but rips like hell above 3000.....

If there is anybody out there that has any clues or hints to help me out, it would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to AF!

You may get a CEL for insufficient flow EGR. Since the EGR artificially leans out the mixture and keeps peak combustion temperatures down you may have a difference in the air/fuel ratio. The oxygen sensor may "sense" the richer mixture and cause the computer to send less gas to the injectors. However, if it runs all right there is no cause for concern. If you have any driveability problems from the leaner mixture you may have to go back to EGR system. I don't think you will have any problems with it. I've always had a dislike for EGR systems. To introduce exhaust gas back into the mixture before it gets into the combustion chamber seems like an odd way to lean it out and lower peak combustion temperatures. If you have inspections in Wisconsin you will have to go back to an EGR system. I see no problems with what you have done.

Thank you for the response. As i said, its my enduro racer now, so CEL is always on due to removal of all accessories under the hood and will never see and inspection again (thank god, i HATE that emission BS testing).

The main thing that got me concerned is the rapid temperature increase in the exhaust manifold. Even after only idling for a few minutes, the manifold is extremely hot and the motor itself is cold yet. First thing i thought was a mixture problem and worry about burning up a piston.

I have yet to let the car truly get up to normal operating temperature since the swap because of the manifolds extreme heat, it had me worried and i shut er down before n anything major could happen (dont wanna have to do another motor and raceday is only 2 weeks away!).

You can always pickup these parts from a junkyard for pretty cheap. Otherwise you might try swapping in a computer from an engine that doesn't have EGR.

Well i tried the ECU for a car with no egr and had very rough idle and almost no acceleration. So i returned that because it just made things worse.
Tried every junkyard within a hundred miles and have come up with nothing so far. I am not the only one that runs the escort for the enduro, seems to be the car of choice because it can handle all 300 laps of beating unlike the cavalier and sunfires. So all of the yards are cleaned out everywhere in the state.

I guess i am just going to run it and see what happens. Really hopin all the work isnt put to shame in a matter of laps...
