Question on switching heads and such
Well im going t buy an si head and throw it on my dx block i dont need the ecu right? i know i need the ecu if i convert it to multi point but what if im not going to do that, can i just buy the head and thats it? Also if i replace the head with a rebuilt head o miles then isnt that almost like the engine is rebuilt because there are not many problems from the block like ever so tell me what anyone thinks about that also

if i were you i would just save up for a B16 and do the conversion yourself. It's really not worth it to do the head swap on the DX.

I've had funny oil burning problems when I put a rebuilt head on a block with only 100k on it. It was a 86 civic, but I was told by a mechanic that the combination of new the new head parts and the old rings creates higher compression, and that somehow causes oil to get past the old rings.
I know that sounds funny, but it happened to me. If I were you, I would try to get a used head from a junkyard that has close to the same milage on it, and slap that on. |

yup...this is a very common problem when the head is rebuilt and the rings are left alone.. rings must always be done when putting new valve springs, seals, etc...

when it over heats not just the head gets fucked. the bottom end can warp as well. if the bottom is warped and you stick a different head on (rebuilt or not) you take the chance of the gasket not sealing. you would have better luck sticking the warped head back on...at least it's warped the same. BUT...why would you want to rebuild a warped head to stick back on a warped block. LMAO throw it in the gutter...go by another. in the words of dropshop "d stands for disposable"

Hi, Lisa.
I've spent the last three weekends installing a used head on my 86 Integra, which is a D16A1 motor...except for DOHC, it's the same as yours (minus a few ccs). After working my ass off getting the old one off and putting the other head on, I don't think it was worth the time and effort. I spent $200 on gaskets(Head gasket, intake and exhaust gaskets), new water pump, timing belt, heater hoses, etc. Plus the $150 I spent for the used head (they are hard to find, so I had to take what I could get.) Now that I've found one in a junkyard, I could have bought an entire motor for $200...plus $50 for a water pump, $40 for a timing belt... Anyway, because the gaskets are so costly, you could install an entire engine for the same price. Plus, you could be done swapping one D-series motor for another one in a day...instead of screwing around for six days trying to replace frickin' head. Flunky PS-I paid extra for Beck Arnley gaskets...they cost a bit more than what Autozone had in stock, but a little extra money for critical parts is worth it, in my opinion. |

You can keep the DX ecu if you do the MPFI swap and install a resistor box.
The SIs do indeed have a different ECU, and you'll want it eventually. Flunky |

If you do put a head on, check the engine block with a true-bar, there should be no more than .002 gap. Not much room to mess with. Fuck a 4-banger, throw a 5.7L LT1, LT4, LS1 in it. |

Re: Re: Re: Re: Question on switching heads and such
thats not the engines fault. its my cat being dead..im 99% sure. the engine you buy from them is basiclly just the block and head, no dizzy, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, etc..

bottom line... MPFI with a PM5/PM9 ECU will run on two cylinders. I know this from personal experience, back when i didnt have a clue about that kind of stuff. |

I cannot speak from experience in this matter.
I haven't done the MPFI swap, although I very seriously considered it. I even bought the intake manifold for it, but sold it to another member when I needed cash. I was going by the "How-To" information here: http://www.4thgenerationcivic.com/ on Ami's site. I didn't see anything there which said you needed to upgrade the ECU as well. Flunky |
