Hedman, the standard base for custom supermodified headers. Good choice.

But I doubt you're familiar with supermodifieds.

That's it, all of us Northeast Ohio guys are going to have to go to an ISMA show next year. Heck, if it's the arm-twist you'll need I'll pay for the tickets.

Okay, here's the basics on a super.

Supermodifieds are, without question, the fastest asphalt short-track cars in the world. These handcrafted monsters are powered by a 488ci methanol burning, fuel injected Chevy big-block producing in the area of 1100hp. The cars weigh around 1200lbs and use direct drive Halibrand quick changes instead of a transmission. (They push start the cars with Jeeps, in case you're wondering how they get going). This leads to race cars with the ability to lap a half-mile oval speedway (like Irwindale or Bristol) in 13 seconds. By contrast, Jeff Gordon's pole at Bristol this August was a 15.035second lap.

The super you see here is Jamie Timmons's ride. Notice the leftwards offset (67% of the car's weight is on the left side to aid cornering) and the coil-over independent front suspension. IFS is not an uncommon setup amongst supers, but many are also torsion bar solid axle (as seen here on Larry Lehnert's #92)

Or even pushrod bellcrank setups like those used on CART, F1, or IRL cars (used to good effect here on Mike Ordway's #61)

One of the distinguishing features of a supermodified, as you may have noticed, is the large aluminum wing mounted on top of the rollcage. These wings are actually mounted to pivot on pneumatic struts so that, when going down the straights, the wings rotate flat to lessen drag, and then snap back upright in the corners for maximum downforce. This, coupled with the aero-oriented bodywork, light weight, and powerful big block, leads to a car that accelerates from going about 100 in the slowest part of the corners, to about 160-170 at the end of the straight.(keep in mind, this is a half-mile track we're talking about)

A feature field of supers is usually 24 cars, and they thunder around the track, their big blocks roaring at 7000rpm, their undercarriages showering sparks as they squat under braking in the corners, those massive Hoosier slicks gripping enough to tear up the asphalt on older tracks. The drivers weave and dart in between each other, and a victory usually isn't decided until the last corner of the last lap.

They're incredible beasts, and ones that have been a part of my life since I was 11 months old. As they gradually lose their place in the motorsports world because of lack of major television coverage or a major sponsor to increase the payout per race, so that these specialized, engineering intense machines wouldn't be so financially impossible to operate (a new supermodified costs about $75,000 to put together, all of it has to be done by one's self because there are no off the shelf parts, and the highest paying race in all of supermodified racing only pays $10,000 to win) I want to share their thunder with as many people as possible, before these short-track terrors are silenced forever.

Re: phase 2 done!

that is pretty damn cool. only 10,000 for a win? it's probably because they "only" put 75,000 into the cars. sure that's a lot of money, but nascar puts way more into their cars, not sure on the numbers but i know it's a lot more

too bad they don't get bigger coverage, that looks really neat.

i wish i had a t3 turbo on my v8 that would destroy anything on the street. i was thinking of adding a supercharger but i don't think it will fit under the hood.

in the pic are a couple racing seats, magnaflow exhaust, hi flow cat, full interior (panels, trim, dash), sliders for seats, hedman hedders, radio, radio panel, new headlights. really not that much, but there is a cool couple grand just sitting there.

i know redneck would prolly beat me out with number of boxes in his backyard... but he is a redneck

Not to mention the blown motor next to the garage... the crank is exposed and rusting. I call it my Pumpkin cause its orange...

And the two Nova hoods I've got in my back yard as well... One from my old '70 Nova, and the one from current '72 Nova.

Yep... I are a redneck at times.

To be honest, I actually cleaned out lots junk a few months ago. I think you could of built a spare motor out of the parts I tossed. Albeit it wouldnt of been a very cool motor... but it'd probably run for like... 20 minutes before explodin into a ball of flames.
