Question I need some advise badly....

My Lumina guage shows that it is overheating after driving for only 4 or 5 minutes. I open the hood but the engine is cool. The guage will often go from hot to cool at a moments notice. Is it my thermostat or something else I need to be checking?

You may have a short. Check the wire coming from the sending unit to the guage. It is grounding out.

Could be the sending unit it bad or the guage is bad. I would check the wire first, then the sending unit and then the guage.
Hope this helps.

I agree. GM's electrical dash units are made very poorly..especially the late 80s and early 90s units. I would look into that as a cause.
