WRX STI = Porsche engine

A friend of mine (a very stupid friend) says the Sti's engine is made by porsche. I'm pretty sure he's full of it. Who's right?
Thanx

The design of the Subaru engine(boxer) is licensed from Porsche, the engine itself is very much built by Subaru entirely.

You friend is a little more than just full of it.

How can that be?

Subaru was making Boxer engines in its airplanes far before porsche ever came about...

Re: WRX STI = Porsche engine

I thought that Porsche took Subaru's idea. I'm going to do a search for this. GOOGLE

Yeah, I couldn't find it either. I was watching this car show last night and it said that BMW had the Boxter motor in their motcycles since 1909 or something like that. Can't really remeber the date, but it was somewhere around there.

Re: WRX STI = Porsche engine

I believe the last 4-Cyl Porsche engine was the 912 in the Mid-60's, and it never came turbocharged. The BMW motorcycle engine is the only other Boxer-4 I know of that is currently being made.

What about VW's boxer engine?

Patents and licenses only have to cover principle of design and operation, not necessarily whether the engine is induction fed or N/A.

My friend came up with the idea. Well honestly he did, except somebody had thought of it way before he did. He doesnt know much about cars but once he asked me "hey man how about an engine like this"... (pretty much described a boxer engine). And I said uuuuuh, do you mean, porsche, subaru and older vw engines??? He thought he was a genius.

I've seen teeny weeny boxer engines on RC planes....
t i i i i i i g h t!!!!!

Also my 86 VW Vanagon has a watercooled boxer. I believe they made those up until 91 or 92.
And yes Porsche has had flat fours and sixes on their cars and still do and as far as I know subaru has always had boxer engines and still do flat four and sixes. And Ive seen beetles running 10's in the quarter mile with N/A porsche engines.

Thanx

The engine is not made by Porsche, nor is it made under any license by them. The gearbox is designed with help from Porsche tho.
