Question 1997 Malibu Keyless Entry Programming

Hi Can someone please help me. I lost one of my remotes for my 1997 Malibu. I bought a replacement off of someone else but need to get it programmed. Can anyone tell me how to do this without going into the dealer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cool 1998 Malibu Programming

As far as I know, the 97,98 and 99's are the same...

ABO1502T

This is how I did it..and it worked! Saved $35!

Look in right side wall of trunk..there's a wire taped to another wire that has a plug on it with two prongs. I used my key, yes, my ignition key to jump the plug..I inserted the key between the two prongs and turned so that the key touched both prongs. My car cycled, unlock, lock, trunk release, unlock, lock, trunk release, horn chirp...while keeping the key in place, push (or have someone else do it) the lock and unlock buttons on your remote at the same time for about 12 seconds..you should hear the car lock/unlock. Remove key from plug. Your remote should now be operable. I only had one remote, so if you have more than one, I'd either try repeating the entire process for each remote, or doing each remote one after the other while keeping the key in the plug. I dunno, but if you figure it out, let me know!

PS- my ignition key has a rubber head! Don't electrocute yourself!

Hi...you may want to call a dealer and give them your VIN # to see if your car was equipped with remote locks before you buy the remote and search for the plug. If you know your equipped, the plug is taped along the wiring harness that runs to the antenna in the trunk. It's on the right hand side if you're facing the trunk. You should see a buncha wires running to the antenna and some of them keep going all the way back to your taillights. Somewhere along there, (you may want to remove the side trunk cover for a better look) there is a single wire with a very small plug slightly hanging off the bunch of wires between the antenna and the tail lights. It should have two prongs in it. You need to "jump" them or use some conductor to connect them (I used a key w/ a rubber head). If you can't find the wire and you're SURE you have a 98 then I'm lost! Every 97-98 I've ever seen has them UNLESS they're not equipped with remote entry!!! So be sure to check!

Take care and good luck!

Deborah

Re: 1997 Malibu Keyless Entry Programming

I have the original brochure for the '98 Malibu (assume the '97 was the same) and can tell you if yours was originally equipped with remote keyless. If not you're wasting your time. Give me details on how the car's equipped. Original aluminum wheels would be a good start.

If non-orig wheels, then describe the interior fabric. More details later today, I'll find the brochure, know right where it is, but ready for some zzzzs now.

Talking transmitter programming for 98-99 malibu

This is what the dealer gave me on how to program the keyless entry. It say's

A remote door lock reciver may have up to four different transmitters programmed. You may program a transmitter to more than one vehicle providing the remote keyless entry systems are similar. When reprogramming one transmitter, reprogram any and all other transmitters (maximum of 4 total per reciver) at the same time in order for the other transmitters to work.

Important

Leave a window down in the vehocle while reprogramming the remote control door lock reciver system. This procedure will avoid an unintentional lock out if the reprogramming is not preformed properly.

1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Ground the reciver program terminal. Jump the two terminals located in the programing ground connector. DO NOT USE AN ALL METAL OBJECT (What this means in simple terms is locate the wires that run on the right side of the trunk. There is two black wires that has a plug on the end with two prongs. It is in between the antenna and tail lights.)
3. Within 2 seconds of conecting the prongs the door locks will lock. The unlock and the rear compartment lid relrase will produce a cycle, causing the horn to chirp. This indicates that the module is ready for reprogramming.
4. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons at the same time until the doors lock and unlock. The rear compartment lid will release and the horn sounds to indicate that the transmitter has successfully been reprogrammed. (Hold buttons down for approximately 12 seconds)
5. Repeat the previous step for the remaining transmitters.
6. Remove the jumper at the program connector.
7. Verify the proper operation of each transmitter.

This really worked. THANX A MILLION GUYS.

By the way....

Some moron told me to connect pin 4 to pin 16 on the obdII port so that I could reprogram my lost remote control door unlock/lock. When I jumped the two pins there was a spark and ever since my cluster went dead. Otherwise car runs fine.

Basically it lights up at night and the check engine light shows prior to start( normal) so I'm certain there is an active connection however it marks no speed, no fuel level, and no rpm. I looked for a fuse but cannot locate correct fuse if any.

PLEASE HELP.

COOL, worked for me! The two pin connector on my '97 was located between the antenna and the taillight, taped to the taillight wires up under the trunk rail.

Thanks for your help on this one!!
