2001 Malibu keyless entry program?

I just bought the keyless remote off of ebay and wanna program it. I searched all over and found nothing on how to do it. Is it possbile? if so please let me know how without taking it to the dealer. Again it is for a 2001 Chevy Malibu

Re: 2001 Malibu keyless entry program?

Hi, hopefully there is another method but the service manual just indicates using scan tool for reprogramming the 2001 Malibu's system. This system works with the vehicles body computer so likely a configuration change of that module might also be required.

Some earlier versions of remote keyless handled more of this stuff directly without involving the body computer (I think it was used on original 1997 Malibu).

Yeah it is done through a scan tool. Up to 4 transmitters can be programmed for each vehicle only.

I don't know if the 2001 has this, since I have a 98, but in the trunk wraped in black tape is a connector....ground those two pins together and hold, and you should hear all the locks across the car click......while still holding, you hold the unlock and lock buttons on your remote for 10 seconds or more until you hear the locks across the car click again.....and whamo, programmed.

That worked on your '98? Good tip, what does the connector look like? More specifics please...

The connector is on the passenger side by the hinges....electrical tape around it...about 1/4 inch wide...sort of up under the top of the fender. It is a female connector. Not sure how else to describe it.

Re: 2001 Malibu keyless entry program?

Malibu - 2001:

1) Sit in the driver's seat

2) Remove the ignition key from the ignition lock cylinder

3) Close all the doors

4) Press and hold unlock on the door lock switch (on the door)

5) While holding the door lock switch in the unlock position, insert and remove the

ignition key twice. DO NOT ROTATE THE KEY.. JUST SLIDE IT IN AND BACK

OUT.

6) Insert the ignition key the third time, leaving the key in the ignition cylinder. DO NOT TURN KEY

7) Release the door lock switch. You will hear 3 chimes indicating the transmitter

programming is active.

8) Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the keyless entry remote at the

same time (one remote) for 12 seconds. You will hear two chimes. This indicates the

transmitter has been programmed.

9) Repeat step 8 for all additional transmitters to be programmed

10) Exit programming by removing the key from the ignition cylinder
