Excel, what to do?

Hello all,
Well, this is my first post to this forum
And basically I have a 96 model Excel and I want more power as it does lack some. Now I did think about buying a R32 GT - R but with the insurance being $8500 a year I decided to give that a miss!! I also thought about getting a silvia but I think the insurance will be just as high, will find out 4 sure tomorrow

Anywayz, I contacted Croydon (spelling??) Auto Sports about what I could do with about $8000. they said the best thing to do would be to change the engine. I said I wanted a Turbo one and they suggested 2 types, a4G63 or a VR4 . Should I or shouldn't I? Also, where can I find the specs on these engine's?

A mate suggested getting a Gemini and putting a VN V6 in it, any thoughts?

well me being an American, I have no idea what the Excel is, but I can still make a few comments about the engines. Is the Excel similar to our Mitsu Mirage, being a front drive sedan (I hope that's a good guess)? In that case, your motor choice is simple: the 4G63 (a 2.0L inline 4, turbocharged). That's the motor in the famed Mitsu Lancer Evo's, and the one in our older domestic market Eclipse, Talon and Laser turbo models. It's a gem of a 4 cylinder, with seriously big power only a turbo upgrade and some engine management basics away. The version in our Eclipse Turbo's has 195-210hp stock (depending on model year), but is capable of putting out over 400hp without any internal modifications. And what's more, if your car is based on the Mirage/Lancer platform, there is a TON of aftermarket equipment ready to make it a beast. The motor itself also has transmissions available for front wheel drive, which is a big plus over the VR4 motor ( a 3.0L V6, twin turbocharged) that has never to my knowledge been used on anything but all wheel drive. That engine is also much more expensive and heavier than the 4G63.

Thanks for your reply mate. This is an edited pic of my car. the main edit is the lowness. It has been lowered but the wheels aren't under the guards
So u can tell me if it's like your mirage's
I am now considering selling what I have and buying a Nissan 95 model 200SX or Silivia S14 as they are also known. U c Excel's aren't worth much and the resell value sux like the Ozzy dollar
So yeah, so confused!!

That's one weird-ass car. Sorry, I know foreign cars look much different. It kindof looks like a Hyundai Excel or is that what it is? I don't know foreign cars. With me being Canadian and all.

never in my life did I think it was actually a Hyundai Excel . I wouldn't try any motor swaps, I would simply trade up to a faster car, because getting a different manufacturer's engine and drivetrain in there would be a complete pain in the ass.

I have thought about that but most of the cars I want the insurance is too expensive.

Nissan 200SX = $9300

Have a muffler shop out on a custom exhaust sytem, and get a K&N Filter. That will help some.

Well, I assume you are talking about my Excel when u were saying about the filter and muffler.
Current mods are as follows:

Extractors and 2inch exhaust
K&N Filter
Rear Sway bar
Rear Camber kit
Lowered springs
129dB stereo
and 17 inch wheels.

Am now planning on getting a Modified throttle body and quick shift kit. If these don't satisfy me for now then I will be selling the car and will be looking into buying an SS Holden Commodore (V8) as the insurance is half the price of the Skyline and 200SX.

just in case any american's are confused, hyundai pulled a fast one on us a little while ago. manufacturers like to give the american versions of the cars weird names. Excels in the US are labeled "Accent"

Are the ADR restrictions really that tough that you have to work over Hyundai's? Its kinda of little sad really, every copy of FF i pick up is full of Swifts and Excels.

Sell the car, get what you can for it, and start again if you really want a fast car. If the cost of petrol doesn't bother you and you want to go fast from the word go then an older VR SS comodore is definitly the way to go, and theres heaps of options out there to make it even faster. If you looking for something a little more econmical then the slyivia is a good choice, (just keep it off the boost, or it'll cost more to run than the V8) but also consider some of the Honda SiRsII that will be showing up as imports, or the Mirage GSR's with Mivec.


Texan the early Gallant VR4s used the 4G63 engine, infact it was fitted to the VR4 before the EVO I.

Do K&N filters help horsepower a lot? What about gas mileage...

K&N claims 2-3 HP and 2-3 pounds of torque for their direct stock replacement filters.

Wether or not anyone gets this is unlikely...

If you really want more HP go for the full cold air intake. supposedly up to 25 HP
