How can you tell the engine?
I'm looking to buy a 01 Camaro SS but was curious, how exactly can you tell the difference between a LS1, LS6, and LT1? Is it clearly posted on the enigine somewhere, or do I have to check the VIN/ enigine number, etc.?

Well, since you have an 01 SS, and not a Z06, chances are immensely in the favor of it being just an LS1. There are rumors that a few F-bodies made it out of the shop with LS6's in them, but I've not ever seen one of those in person, unless it was a conversion after the fact. You'd check the engine codes on the transmission, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm gonna agree with blkcamaroSS, I've never seen a LS6 camaro. I read that when the new camaros come out in 05-06 they will have LS6's in the Z28's. But buddy is correct in which year had what motor.

Thank you for explaining how to tell...I've decided that I want the 02, and will be buying shortly. (I never said I OWNED an 01 ;-)) I now know fairly for certain that I'll have a LS1 under the hood. That's what I needed...Thanks

Some 02 Fbodies came with the LS6 block but they all have LS1 heads.
The revised LS6 block has better oil passages and is a bit stronger than the regular LS1 block. LS1 and LS6 have a plastic intake manifold. For 2002 the LS1 has the LS6 intake as well. LT1s were aluminum intake manifolds.

I can only assume there are aftermarket intakes to switch out...*imagining the engine dying, looking under the hood and seeing a big melted plastic mess*

There are no aftermarket intakes for the LT1 unless you wanna count the LT4.
The LS1s have an aluminum one made by holley but I don't know anyone that has bought one. And the only way you would melt a plastic LS1 ntake is if your engine caught fire. In that case the intake would be the least of your worries.

The composite LS1 and LS6 intakes IMO are great. No heat soak!! The only problem is them standing up to high boost and Nitrous.... From what I've heard, the holley isn't much different at all than the LS6, but right now, Futral Motorsports has a sheetmetal intake designed for Large cubes and high reving race engines that shows 10-20 rwhp over the LS6 intake... ALSO, it is rumored that Fuel Air Spark Technologies is coming out with the LSX intake that looks almost exactly like the LS series intakes from GM and the one from Holley, but it out performs them all. I'm personally waiting for dyno graphs since the Futral intake is more than my setup needs right now.
