trunk latch?

i just went on vacation to ocean shores (wa), we stuffed the trunk, and when my mom went to open, using the button on the keyless entry, it just made a popping noise, and didn't open. i tried using the latch on the driver's side door, but that gave me the same results, the only way to open it it with the key. the only thing that i see wrong with the trunk is this little cable/wire, that isn't plugged in, its on the inside, where the license plate is, and i think that might be the problem, but i don't know where to plug it in, does anyone know how to fix it?
