85.5 944 porsche clutch problems

The clutch does not disengage and the pedal is stuck on the floor. Other than this I believe the transmission to be working. Could this be the master or slave cylinders? If so how big of a job would this be to fix. While I'm not a pro mechanic I feel I'm capable of smaller jobs not requiring highly specialized tools. Thanks.

Have you checked the fluid level?

It sounds like either the slave or master cyliner is leaking and you've run out of fluid.

Fill it back up, bleed it, and it should work again untill you can sort out replacing the leaking culprit.


It is possible one has failed completely, but its highly unlikly.

The other possiblity is the clutch pressure plate/cover plate has completly failed, in which case you will need replace the clutch, but leave it for a last possible option.

Thanks for the quick reply. I checked the break fluid and indeed it was low (below the minimum). What is involved with replacing the master (or slave) cylinders? Theanks.

The slave cylender is easier to replace but what's really important is to find out which one is leaking or if it is the line. The slave cylinder can be found by getting under the car right next to the starter. It has two bolts holding it on. The master has to be detached from the clutch pedal and then unbolted from the firewall. There is a clip on the clutch pedal (inside the car, haha)where the pin on the master attaches to the clutch pedal. You must remove the clip. it's not easy if you dont know what it looks like, I can try to describe it, you cant see it from where you will be working (face up laying under the dash ). It slides off like a circlip, but it's held in place by the fact that it it a folded over piece of metal acting like a spring. to un-do, pull with a screwdriver or your thumb toward the center console and the slide the whole thing off the shaft. then pry the shaft off the master cylinder which will allow you to pull it out from the firewall. Hope that made some sense.

Thanks Kevin. I've been holding off until I get some documentation. I've orded the haynes manual and have found the workshop manual for the 944 on the web (520meg download!). While I probably have enough info to go it witout those I'll wait just the same. I see there are rebuild kits for the slave cylinder and so I hope the slave or the hose is the problem, however any of the replacement parts aren't too expensive on ebay. My current plan is to bleed the clutch, find the leak and go from there. BTW do any of you know if a pressure bleeder is a requirement for this job?

good plan. No, you don't need a pressure bleeder. I replaced mine the good old fashioned way, with a friend pumping the clutch and me bleeding the line. It took a while, but it worked.
