Unhappy Have to jump the starter

I have a '93 acclaim, 4cyl (not flex fuel, whatever that is), auto trans.

Turn the key and the the solenoid doesn't even click, but the starter does engage with a jumper wire run directly from the battery to the small post on the solenoid. According to the Haynes manual for this car that means the problem must be the starter switch, neutral start switch, wiring or fusible link. All seem to check out o.k. By that I mean the starter switch was replaced, with a new one, tried two different junk yard neutral start switches and visually checked the fusible link. What did Haynes leave out?

Also, when I put in reverse (and/or turn on the a/c fan) instead of reverse lights, the e-brake indicator lights on the dash.

Try tapping on the ASD relay that is located on the left front fender, next to the battery. Wire from there goes to the starter. Try tapping it or replace it with a good know part.
