i have a vr4 and i was wondering how people set up there turbos using the stock front one and an upgrade in the back and what is a good match if this is true, and also if this is possible. another thing i wanted to know if the turbos work together or one is a starter and the other for top end

The turbos are sequential which keeps the spooling time down. You can just upgrade the rear one, but you'll increase the lag time for the smaller one to drive it. Replace both if thats what you'd like to do.

Before you do that though, have you done the BPU like a boost controler, open air filter and (if you can get away with it) open exhaust (gutted cats...)?

what turbo spools up first and what would a good second turbo be to get. i have already did my exhaust intake fuel but still deciding what to do about turbos. have knowledge about cars but a little lost about this problem because of so much hearsay

unlike that supra which i believe does have sequential turbos, no 3000 GT ever came with sequential turbos. the VR-4's all came stock with TD04 9b turbos with the exception of a few in europe that came with TD04 13G turbos. the 9b's spool very quickly because they are small (generally around 2500rpm if i remember correctly). anything is possible so you could make a sequential setup but any gains are far smaller than all of the effort that you are going to put into making it happen.

a very small number of people have run different turbos on the front and back and some have had good results. if you do decide to go this way, make sure you REALLY know what you are doing beforehand. one person was running a 13G and a 9b and ran some good times at the track, forgot who. the problem with this is that you can get back pressure in the side with the smaller turbo and you can mess a lot of stuff up. you would not want to run turbos that are very different (260 cfm turbo and a 400 cfm turbo for example) you can do a search on www.3si.org and you will find plenty of information on this.

the main concern that you will have running more boost or bigger turbos is the fuel system, not intake or exhaust. intake/exhaust will free up a lot of power and you should get a good boost guage (stock one is garbage) and a boost controller to make sure you can control your boost but the fuel is the main concern. if you do not have the fuel to back up the boost, say hello to detonation and good bye to your engine. you will want to upgrade your pump and possibly get bigger injectors or a fuel controller if you are going for really high boost. i would suggest you start with gutting all of your cats, getting a k&n nockoff air filter (just as good) and getting an $18 boost controller and a $15 boost guage. this can all be done for less than $100 and should put you at around 400hp at the crank. oh, by the way that is with boost set at 14.5 psi, the limit more or less of the stock fuel and turbo setup. that will hold you off until you know what you want to do (read up, you will thank yourself later )

common upgrades for a VR-4 turbo wise are 13G's 15G's 17G's DR500's DR650's GT347's GT357's 368-SX's and a variety of really pricy bigger setups and some new TD05 setups that are just now being released

yea i thought that name was familiar. i go by the same name both places as well. so if you have been around so long why did you think that the stock turbos were sequential j/k you probably just forgot a "not" in there because everything else you said was right on.

i acctually just found this forum because i am looking for a new car (1G 3kgt with bad motor or tranny or uber high milage so i can get it cheep) i stumbeled here and thought i would give my .02. anyway, talk to ya later,

Your right about the turbo setup. I should have read my post and been more descriptive, but you're explanation was leaps and bounds past what I could do
