Serious discussion about the next GT-R...

We haven't had a serious thread in a while.

Does anyone wonder about the weight of the car? The great balance and handling of the new chassis comes at a price. The FM platform is pretty beefy/heavy, since it has to support the Infinti FX35/45's towing capacity. That's probably why Nissan decided to go with an aluminum block motor, whether it be the VQ or the VK.

At launch, the VQ30 weighed only 108lbs. The weight of accessories was probably left out, but the engine is likely still under 200lbs. Even the weaker RB25 weighs over 500lbs, and the RB26 is undoubtedly heavier. Using the VQ would provide a great opportunity to save weight on the GT-R, even if the larger 3.3L and 3.5L versions are a bit heavier.

Any other thoughts?

720 pound's to be exact , even though the rb26 is very heavy, the tremendous power it makes compensates for the weight disadvantage.

720 pound where did you get that figure from? Thats heavier than a 426 Hemi.

I would take a 426 Hemi over any engine

If your are corrct on the 720, is that just the engine? What about the trans axle?

I have heard that the RB26 weighs close to 1,000lbs, but I'm not sure if that figure includes the transmission or not.

Regardless, using a VQ will help immensely. An FM-chassis GT-R with awd and an RB would be very heavy. I'd be willing to guess at least 3700lbs.

I saw the new for '03 Mustang Cobra, and noticed that it uses an iron block version of the 4.6 DOHC V8. That got me thinking:

What if Nissan did the same with the VQ? The stronger block would give tuners the durability they need, while still allowing for better weight distribution. Unfortunately, cooling issues would arise. I'm sure the engine would be much heavier than the alloy VQ, but given new levels of technology and weight saving methods, it should still weigh less than the RB26.
I doubt Nissan would go this route however, since the changes would obviously add to the GT-R's development costs and be passed on to the consumers.

Like everyone else here, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the R35. Read that Lotus is helping with the handling (if memory serves me right) and that Cosworth is helping with the engine. Dunno whether those are true. If they are true, it is nothing less than mouth watering.
But what really excites me was the electric-assisted turbo, which on paper at least, would reduce lag to almoust nought. I am really looking forward to that...at least while I safe enough money to buy the R35, I could in the meantime plonk in those turbos in my current GTR. Hmmm...yum...yum....

Yeah, there's been talk of VQ sleeves among boosted Maxima owners, but they ruled out the idea since they would have to be custom(and expensive).

I remember the rumor that Cosworth was supposed to be helping to strengthen the VQ, but who knows if that is true or not. It'd be great if it was.

Sure, the VQ is pretty strong on stock internals(429fwhp for a stock turbo VQ30 so far), but there's no way it can match the RB.

i'm sure that with proper reinforcing it can be as strong as the RB

Thanks for the link. Actually, FA is where I heard that the RB26 was close to 1,000lbs.

I'll have to check back when Sean finishes weighing everything. I need to calculate the power to weight ratio of an S14 with an RB for a story I'm writing. The only thing helding me back is not knowing the weight of the engine(and thus, the car's curb weight).

In japan right now there are a number of companies such as Top Secrete and Jun swapping the RB over for the new VQ series motors. In a short time you can bet there will be a huge number of aftermarket performance parts available. So given that information it appears that for sure the V6 will be the engine of choice from Nissan for the next Gen GTR.
Whether or not it will retain the Skyline badge is another issue. I hope so mostly for nestalgia sakes.

I haven't seen or heard for sure, as I doubt anyone has on what shape it really will be though. Judging from the different concepts I've yet to see one I personally like. Too bad they couldn't retain a simular shape to the R34, maybe with slight aesthetic changes.
