Question automatic act as manual w/o clutch?

Okay I have an automatic transmission and i was reading my owners manual because i didn't know what the different gears below D4 meant and it says that by moving through the gears from 1 through D4 it will act as a manual transmission w/o the clutch... Ive been doing that and its sweet cuz ive always wanted a manual (it doesnt make that grinding sound or anything, it was doing fine) but then my b/f says that screws up the engine and he called the dealer and the dealer said the same thing... why would it say that you could do this in the manual though if it was unsafe for the car?

the gear shift is only good when you're towing something or going up a steep hill/mountain. it's not good for racing

oh, congrats on beating an escort

It will not screw up your tranny its there for your use, My dad has been doing transmissions for 24 yrs now and people ask him that all the time and like i said he replys with they put them there so you can use em'. Any time you shift an auto manual or automatic it wears things out so it really doesnt mattter
