Suspension Questions?

1. What has better comfortability? Springs/Shocks or Coilovers?

2. How hard are springs/shocks / coilovers to install? How much is it to get them installed professionally?

3. What are currently the best combo of springs / shocks? Second best?

4. What are currently the best coilovers? Second best?

5. Can i see pictures of your ride, and you tell what kinda suspension stuff you got?

Thanks a lot

1.) springs/shocks wayyy more comfortable than coilovers. you'd DEFINITELY want aftermarket shocks if you got coilovers (the sleeve type anyway), cuz coilovers will blow your stock shocks ASAP

2.) shocks/springs are easy to install.. takes like 2-3 hours for the front and 1.5-2.5 hours for the rear if its your first time. professionally installed they have better tools (i.e. impact guns) and lots of experience so they'll get done quicker. be at least 3 hours though, so 3 hours * $70/hr = $210... soooo worth it to do it yourself.

3.) get some eibach sportlines with koni yellows.. good combo.

4.) tokico illumina coilovers are about $800 and they're adjustable. tein flex are also very good. i dont have experience with either so i cant say which one is better, but they're both very very good.

Forget about sleeve type coilovers
True coilovers adjustaded correctly will have a better ride than spring/shocks
Always a good idea to replace shocks when adding performance springs

How low do you wanna go?

Tein & H&R have nice coilovers
**H&R's cup kit** is a nice matched spring/shock kit
Eibach / Neuspeed / H&R good springs
Tokico, Koni, KYB for shocks

If you plan on street driving, I dont see the need for adjustable coilovers. You'll never use them for what they are for . . .

Ok, well im thinking im gonna go with springs/shocks anyway, due to the fact that coilovers need so much tuning etc, and from what ive heard they just seem to be a lot more of a hassle, and have worse handling/comfort etc.

Ok back on track of thread

true coilovers have the best handling/performance

sleeve type would be the worst

Tuning? no way! I have Tein SS coilovers on my Civic and when I bought them, I had a shop install them for me, and that was it. The shop I went to, the owner said he'd "adjust" some stuff for me to make it more responsive, but I wonder if there was really much else done besides the install. Anyways, the only tuning required is setting the proper ride height of the shocks (talking TRUE coilovers, here) which should set the with the lowest point of the car 90mm from the ground. Your car it might be your bumpers or exhaust, on my car the resonator to my exhuast is the lowest point. The shop would do all that adjusting for you though providing they pay attention to what they are doing. Only tuning you ever have to do is maybe dampening adjustment if you choose to adjust it (not required though) say if you want stiffer handling, or want to soften the ride up a bit comfort wise. That adjustment only takes a matter of seconds, and all you need to do is pop the hood to adjust the fronts, and have access to the shock tops in your trunk area. I did this by cutting a quarter sized hol about 3/4 of the way around to create a hidden "flap" that i can pull back to expose the strut tops for quick dampening adjustment of them. I can have all 4 of my corners on my car adjusted from stiffest to softest in about 30 seconds.

And Jackasssi is correct, I can tell you from first hand experiance, true full coilovers DO infact have the best handling and comfort since the valving of the shocks they come with is specifically matched to the rates of the springs, so one won't out strain the other as would happen when you mix typical shocks and seperate springs together.

seems to me that you should stick to a good set of springs & shocks.

each time the vehicle is raised/lowered on coilovers, an alignment is recommened.
