Cheap resin parts idea?

Well for a living I am a composite tech doing carbon/kevlar work mainly well friday I was hot glueing a mold seam and for sh!t5 n giggles I thought well lets squeeze some on my subaru key to see if it will pick up the small letters on the key head well minutes later i pulled it and it did! I was very surprised so next up I thought well a glue gun 8.00 and a quart of polyester resin from an auto parts store would work great and very inexpensive compared to model shops. figure th polyester resin is like 10.00 with hardener and probally need to thicken it up with cotton flock or microballons etc.

Well before i try to knock of some small parts anyone try this method? Also figure for a mold release as with work use any sort of wax, petro jely etc...

Also anyone planning to experiment with this method I should say polyester resin is very potent to teh nose and also irrates the skin...

If you are just going to make one copy, than you can use almost anything to make the mold.

Dunno about using hot glue for a mold, neat idea though.

I've cast parts with fiberglass resin, it's sort of like epoxy resin to work with. No need to thicken it with anything, you want it as thin as possible to pick up details.

GE Silicone II caulking works okay for quickie molds too. I've never had the patience to get good results with 2 part caulking molds though. It can be done, but it takes a bit of time and effort. Basically, I'm lazy.

Works fine for making a few copies - for cheap.
