Yes, it can be done, anything is possible. You will of course need a 5 speed tranny, clutch, bellhousing, pressure plate, throwout bearing, driveshaft (although a AOD d/s will work, just not recommended), pedal assembly, umm oh yeah and a shifter. I think I'm still forgetting something, but I'm sure someone else will chime in if I did. You can do the swap yourself, but it may take some time to do so. If all goes well and you pick stuff up used, I can see you spending about $600 for the parts, or up to $1500 depending on tranny.

The worst part is the install of the pedal assembly. You dont have to but you should change to a Manual Computer.

Unless it's mass-air.Then they seem to readjust after about an hour and all's well.
You'll need to modify the trans crossmember as well.Just cut the tack welds that hold the tubes to the frame. The frame will then be free to slide back and forth.Bolt the package in,and once it's settled,re-tack the frame to the tubes and you're done. |

computer??? he has a 69, i have a 67 and i'm doing the same thing (cept mines down to nothing now) there should be in yours(maybe not) a hole that can be punched out for the clutch in the engine bay, and you will need everything else they said, and its just more work then anything else.... but majorly worth it

My bad also Im use to late model. It depends what standard tranny you what to use. If you were thinking T-5 many kits are made but it is also the most difficult as compared to other Ford trannies that were put in Stangs of those years

I also heard that you have to change the coolant lines over for a manual

There's no computer controlled functions on an AOD,or on any trans in any 1979-1993 Mustang 5.0.The only wiring is the harness for the neutral safety switch and back up lights. There's also the VSS on the side of the trans that also runs the cruise control.
The stock trans cooler lines come out with the AOD.Unplug 'em from the rad and plug the holes(or it'll drip for a month.) |

The only real challenge of doing this conversion is getting all the linkage from the clutch pedal to the clutch arm. If you dont have a manual or diagram that shows all of these connections, get one! It will save tons of time. Besides that problem, everything should be relatively easy.

And on a '69 it should be VERY easy to get all of the conversion parts either brand new(from NPD or whatever) or from a Mustang specific salvage yard. Some even sell complete changeover kits.

What would It take to do this conversion on my 91' 5.0?
