Inspection Problems

I installed a BBK cold air intake into my car, the kind where the filter rests in the fenderwell, and I took my car in to get it inspected(in Texas) and they said that since there is no box covering the filter they would not give my car the OK. Whats with this? Is it an illegal CAI?

That's interesting. I now some places have really strict inspection laws, but that's ridiculous! I know my car passes here, and Mass has pretty strict laws too. What reason did he give for not passing?

That CAI should have come with a heat shield anyway. I mean waht good is a CAI unless it is seperated from the rest of that 1200 degree engine? You can make one out of a plastic trash bin from WalMart if you want to get creative, Just measure and make cut outs. Then rivet them to seal it off. A guy did this when he put in a new MAF meter on his v6.

see it here:

I don't know why they have to be so tight when it comes to that though. I'm sure you can get it appealed higher up (I know a guy that went to the top in my area b/c they wanted him to spend 600 dollars to put something on an old Cherokee that didn't even work on it... sometimes I wonder why I'm smarter than the mechanic... honestly)

Some CAI come with CARB# paperwork. Show them that, they cant fail for that part if you have that. Other than I dunno, I never heard that before but its F-ing ridiculous sorry.

oh well

Guess thats what I get for taking it to some crappy express lube place to get it inspected. And I believe it does have a heat shield, a chrome piece that attaches to the engine compartment and allows the arm to pass through into the fender and connects to the filter on the other side, but the morons probably didn't know what it was. Oh well, I will find somewhere else tomorrow I guess, thanks for all the help everybody!

You just a side note, a little OT. A few years ago I went to get my car inspected and the guy said he wouldn't pass me cause of my fog lights. I have aftermarket fog lights that are yellow at night, but when off the lens has a purplish tint to them. He said that I had blue lights and it was illegal, but didn't care if they were off or on. Some of these inspection stations are a little extreme at times!

WOW how nit picky can you get.At my shop we wont tamper with cats.Cars come in all the timewith precats off and I had to take a customers car that got real ill in for the 3 hour inspection. Here in AZ.they are EZ just the sniffer and thats itif you have no wiper blades/bad ball joints/worn brakes or if you push it onto the Dyno they dont care.
In N.Y. where I lived for 31 years it was the repair station that was state certified and they found any little poop so you can drop $$$$$$$$$$ on repairs that often werent necessary.
When I got my inspection liscence I got canned within 2 mos. because I wouldnt scam, and I vowed 1 day I would own a speed/tunning shop and always be fair and honest.
I now own for 6 years a shop here in Tempe AZ.called Xtreme Motor Sports and we time every job or flat rate it by our book not the mfrs. And since were awapping cams building motors/strokers twin turbo kits and superchargers tranny's the works .
Our honesty just from word of mouth is making us grow to the point 2 days ago we installed our 4TH lift and we need 2 more techs and a receptionist.
All our jobs are word of mouth and though you cant get rich in this game I own a larger Biz that supports my 8 person hosehold. It seems that in 4-6 mos. we will be turning actual PROFIT a novel concept but with 4 full time and 2 part time techs were booked with motor jobs till Late Sept. Now with more personellthere goes the profit back into the co.so I'm last on line and in 6 years only put money in now I can take small loan payments back.
My other Co. in Canada we build all Ford products same deal 16 years to finally be profitable but we have a huge machine shop a 22000 sq.ft.building free and clear, and we do more formula 1 and we are now an OEM mfr. for Ford MG of Great britain and many others, and its all due to believing in G-D and being honest with your clients.
We had a car come in 2 mos. ago for a dyno tune 500.00 and he passed the sniffer with a 575rrwhp Twin Turbo pakage as well as many other cars have passed with no emmisions at all.
My C5R TT puts out 897 rrwhp at 12 Lbs.of boost and I passe they were shocked at how clean the motor ran better than original stock Z06 #'s
I feel sad you guys are being screwed but thats a game that will bite you in the ass 1 day.Good Luck,Dave S.
