Why should people hook up their car?

Okay, a friend of mine just made a crack on why da hell people hook up their cars (loud exhaust, high spoilers, etc..). I need to compile a list of reasons why hooking up your car is actually GOOD. Any ideas, plz donate. Thanks.

If you do anything yourself concerning your car, its time used to learn, not wasted. Its a hobby.

death wish. j/k =)

i think everyone gets into it for their own reasons. For a lot of people it's a hobby, like max said. for others, its to just learn something and then apply that knowledge. For others its a social thing, and others think its a way to get with the local 'in' crowd (ricers). Some take it as a challenge - to squeeze as much power out of a car as they possibly can. Others (though not on this forum, i'd wager) do it for the safety aspect of having power, handling, braking etc. in reserve to get you out of a tight situation. And others just do it because they can. Everyone has their own reason - what's yours?

As for the good that comes out of it? knowledge, friends, a better car, a smaller wallet (oh wait thats not good ), depending what you do you can get a better gas mileage, better control, better traction, better braking, better handling, better acceleration, etc which are all a 'Good Thing (tm)' to have if you need 'em. The looks you get, the respect from fellow enthusiasts, the random conversations on the street with total strangers.... hows that for a start?

  • for looks - everyone has their own tastes and opinions which makes this hobby fun
  • performance - some of us autocross, road race, drag race - where we have to keep up with our peers
  • economy - intakes, exhausts, headers, wheels, tires can help better miles per gallon by lightening the car and/or getting more air into the engine

First off the high spoilers and extra loud exhaust arent people hooking up their cars thats called a ricer, and they are the ones that do it for the purpose that they think its gonna make them cooler or get more chics when in reality all they are doing is giving us a good laugh at their cars. The best reason is that its a really cool hobby. Cause if you do most of the owrk yourself you can look at it when your done and be proud of your work, and hopefully your car can speak for your hard work. I think that also I do work to my car to have a fast car i love going fast bottom line. Also depending on how I drive my car if I could manage to drive it like a normal person Id get really good gas milage. But I think generally its just a matter of a person having a hobby is the real reason for why we do what we do!

i agree with the fact that modding your engine and stuff can give your car better gas mileage and stuff. However, someone could counter that spending $200+ bucks for and intake and $500+ for an exhaust would cancel out your gas savings anyways.

people that waste their money putting a wing, clear taillights, body kit, and a fart can on a Civic for anything other than a pure show car (and even then, the wing and clear taillights are still gay), are.. gay.

That's why.

Seriously, "hooking up" your car with neon, LED's wings, fart cans, clear taillights, and the other random stupid crap that sixteen year olds waste their money on, is about the stupidest thing you can do. You waste money so that people can laugh at you on the freeway, you try to race everybody on the street because you believe that the stickers and wing give you an extra boost of power that magically makes you able to beat a Z28, and then swerve around in traffic because you think you're hot crap and a "great driver" with some high performance machine, and give the rest of us import owners a bad name.

fart can? So you believe keeping a stock exhaust with a turbo charged b18c1 engine would be better for the car rather than having an after market high performance exhaust?

i personally think its better to have an entire cat-back exhaust system put in to allow the car to perform better. Those people who change their muffler alone just to produce sound are wasting money.

I modified my car to race it. I race at most local and east coast events and do some street racing. I have a built gsr block/stock head along with a decent sized turbo in my 00 civic coupe. I modified my car to make me happy, it's something i enjoy doing. I dont' have a wing or outrageous bodykit. My car sits a little lower and i have a set of decent wheels on it. The car makes 500whp and 360ft lbs of torque. It's not one of these pep boy sponsored cars you see daily.
