Why doesn't Tamiya sell aftermarket rims?

Is there a reason why Tamiya doesn't solo-box any of their rims? You would think with the number of kits they sell that require male connections, and their quality, they would make a killing selling their male connection rims seperate. They have a lot of good wheels already cast as well.

Anybody know why they don't do this?

quality over quantity....

tamiya like to sell kits and accesorries with higher quality rather than like fujimi...mass production of shitty accesorries..(well most of them are, not all of them)

But if Tamiya did it right (18+ inches, a nice chrome finish, nice rubber) they would only need maybe 10 styles of rims (providing they make desirable ones) as a pilot project. I think they would destroy Fujimi. People trust Tamiya.

i completely agree. they need to step it up.

just so you know you can order the wheels and tires seperately from any kit you like. I've done it multiple times. just get the part # of the model kit the wheels are in and call them here. if they have them they are about $5 plus shipping per set.

Ah yes, Tamiya, the company that raises the questions, "Why don't they do this?", "Why don't they do that?". Also the company that gets the most rumors and speculation flying about. One things for sure, they always march to the beat of their own drum and that's what keeps them successful. Almost never bowing to trends and fads, except for the plated body kits for example.

They have never intentionally gone head to head against their competition that I know of, so selling wheel kits would be like jumping on the band wagon to them, not their style.

Let's be glad they hold true to their successful business plan that has made them the strongest model company in the world and trust that.
Just keep in mind they almost never do the obvious, but often do the unexpected.

I mean there are times when Tamiya does things that just make scratch my head and go "Huh?" Like turning down the Sauber license for 1/20...but more often than not, they leave me lusting for more of their products.

well spoken. I don't see how making more wheels available to there customers could hurt them. and other companies have been doing this for years now so it wouldn't be considered "trend" because it's not a new thing

It wouldn't be a trend, but remember, Tamiya is much more diverse than it's competition that do sell wheels so they don't need it for another avenue for profit. As far as I know Aoshima and Fujimi are basically model companies that are fairly diverse in that arena, where as Tamiya has many lines of toys like, plastic and die-cast models, Dangun racers, Mini 4WD's, paint, tools, R/C models, educational etc. They also have the largest warehouses which is an added cost to maintain and inventory, Aoshima and Fujimi basically ship out the production to disributors right away.
Tamiya's engineering/design department is rather small so the military model employees also do the car models etc. This is to say they probably feel they are a well rounded company and have enough irons in the fire already, it is unlikely wheel kits are very high in their interest.
