Starter shim size?
I'm putting a new starter into a 84 Iron duke.
The starter I pull out was not original and it had a shim with it. I have an AC Delco that I'm putting into it and it did not come with any shims. Do I need any with this new starter? ![]() |

Re: Starter shim size?
As a general rule, you use the shim that is in the vehicle......for example, whoever put the new starter in, may have reused the original shim......
Start it and listen for a noise.....if if starts ok, but when you release the key there is a noise as the starter disengages, then the shim is too thick(not enough clearance, starter drive hangs up instead of easily releasing)....if there is a noise as it engages, then the gap is too big and you need a thicker shim......did you check under the flap of the box? They usually come with shims...... |
