2002 Ignition switch??

I have a 2002 Monte SS that has the 3800, over the last year I've been having problems with it starting. When you turn the key it doesn't turn over or do anything. About a 1/2 hour later I tried it again and it started. I replaced the battery because when I got my oil changed they said my battery was weak, and then about 6 months ago it did it again, I waited a 1/2 hour, 1 hour, etc. Nothing...I tried again the next morning and still nothing, so had it towed and they replaced the starter and it worked great for a while. Now it's doing it again. I talked to some other people and they say it sounds like an ignition switch? Does anyone know if this will actually fix it? I don't want to keep spending money on things that aren't going to fix it.

Also a couple days before it does this the security light will come on from time to time.

Any help would be great.
Thanks

It will be the ignition switch typically...although it could be the wiring to the switch ..un common...after you replace it, you will need to do the relearn procedure which is try to start, leave in run position, try again 10 min later, leave in run try again...u need to do this about 3 times I believe then it will star and have learned the new values for the hall effect sensor...another way to beat this is program it out of the pcm so that the passkey is disabled.

Re: 2002 Ignition switch??

Just for anyone looking at this post trying to figure out why your Monte won't start all the time even though your dash lights are all lited. Chevy had a problem with their passive lock system starting in 1997 and out to 2006 in most of their vehicles. How do I know, I lived with mine doing this for about 5 years until I finally broke down and took it to the Dealership to have the system changed out. It took some hunting to figure out what it was and once I found out it would cost 600.00 to fix I decided to just sit on it for awhile. Well it does get worse, there is a by pass which I forget how to do but I did find that info on the internet so it's out there. So I called around to dealerships telling them what the symptoms were, most of them said they didn't know what the problem was but it was probably an ELECTRICAL problem. Needless to say I already knew what the problem was so I just kept calling differnt ones until the mechanic at Biddle Chev in Bothell WA said "Oh that's the passive lock system", I then made an appt with them and they took care of it at the tune of 550.00. But I have not had the problem since! My understanding it has to do with the TIN conector that goes to the Ignition, it rusts or something. If they would have used Brass it wouldn't have happened, they used a penny part instead of a nickle part! BTW the reason I called around to different dealerships is because I am a woman and I know they all know what the problem is but they were seeing dollar signs when I called. I am a car girl and I refuse to be treated like some of these mechanics treat women!! Your regular mechanic CAN NOT change this out it has to be done at the dealership! Happy Driving, I love my Monte Carlo SS!!!!!

Chances are your PassLock sensor/lock cylinder was replaced......anyone can do it, if you know how to do it......fairly simple....

Re: 2002 Ignition switch??

I did end up getting the ignition switch replaced, about a year and a half ago now. It cost me $200 and I have never had the problem again. When I called the dealership, they told me 2002 didn't have the passlock system. Either way, I'm just glad that it's fixed and I am not worrying about it anymore.
