highway shifting issue

We have a 2008 VUE 2.4L. automatic. The car is having a shifting problem. As you reach highway speeds the VUE does not seem to have shifted in to top gear. It seems as if it is still in a lower gear. The tach is way up and it takes a moment to catch up, sometimes longer. You can hear a whining noise because of the slow shift. Do we have a transmission problem at 56k miles? Seems rather early. Oil is changed regularly.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
