1996 mecury sable Transmistion
My sable's transmistion keeps pulling sometimes...i heard lucas tramistion fix liquid fixes this so i am going to use that...but i also wanted to know which tranmission fluid had the most micron moly....i have royal purple atf but i want to get the royal purple max atf for better trnsmition protection and longer life...but it says there not recomended for cars Ford Type F and MERCONŽ SP & LV...and i think my sable is one of the ones above?...should i still use it with the tranmition fix?...

Re: 1996 mecury sable Transmistion
What do you mean by "keeps pulling"? Do you mean it sometimes doesn't upshift like you think it should?
Realistically, if the transmission is not operating as designed, no fluid additive (other than what the manufacturer calls out) is going to "fix" the transmission. Some may serve as a bandage temporarily, but what ever the real problem is, will remain. -Rod |

Re: 1996 mecury sable Transmistion
yeah like when its in park and i push the brake to reverse...then i switch fron park to reverse...it feels really hard...then when im on the road and i suddenly speed up from like 30 to like 50 mph the car reaches high rpms first then the transmition pulls like it shift gears in a hurry and just slaps wut ever gear it needs.i could live with that...but i just want to make sure the car will last...im not looking for performance so if i have to drive really carefull all the time im fine with that...just want to put a bandade so it can last for a while..and um some of that royal purple max atf for some really good micron moly protection but i dont know if i can..it says not for mercon and stuff...could i still use it?

Re: 1996 mecury sable Transmistion
I'm no transmission expert, but if the additive you want to use states not to use it with the fluid that's in your transmission, my concern would be that it may glaze the clutches or possibly even cause some valves or seals to expand and stick
Your symptoms sound somewhat similar to what happens with the Ford 5R55 transmissions that didn't have the correct additive installed which caused the shift solenoids to stick. The unfortunate thing with that is because the metal actually expanded, once the problem occurred the fix is to replace the solenoids. Installing the additive after the fact would not improve the issue. -Rod |

Re: 1996 mecury sable Transmistion
hey i fixed the "when i go from park to reverse it feels hard" problem...i was parking too close to the sidewalk that the front wheels bumped the sidewalk...now i dont park so close to the sidewalk that i bump it..and when i go from parking to reverse it feels normal and smooth instead of hard......dont know y....but it worked...i am going to put "lucas transmission mix" http://www.lucasoil.com/products/dis...iid=29&catid=2 to stop the rough shifting......and i wanted to put some "royal purple racing automatic tramission oil' http://www.royalpurple.com/product-c...smission-fluid because i assume it would have more micron moly which means more protection for my transmition....but it says this at the bottom of the page..Racing ATF is not recommended for any stock automatic transmissions or for street use where a friction modified fluid is recommended such as a GM DexronŽ III or Ford MerconŽ. For automatic transmissions calling for a GM DexronŽ / Ford MerconŽ fluid, we recommend Royal Purple’s Max ATF. .....and after what you told me i guess i am going to stick with max atf......thank you shorod.....i just want to know what oils out there have the most micron moly?...do you know of any?....i have heard good things about schaeffer..http://www.schaefferoil.com trying to get the maximum protection......thank you shorod for your time...

Re: 1996 mecury sable Transmistion
I'm glad to hear you figured out the shifting from park concern. By rolling in to the parking stop you were probably causing the parking prawl in the transmission to bind. Similar things can happen if you park on a steep incline. If your parking brake works without sticking, you can reduce the chance of binding by setting your parking brake before shifting to park.
As for transmission fluid options, I cannot be of much help there. I stick with what's called out in the owner's manual unless that's overcome by a subsequent Technical Service Bulletin. The best protection is probably to change the fluid and filter regularly rather than trying to find some expensive additive or fluid package that may actually cause more harm than good if it's not specifically designed for the application. -Rod |
