Windstar trans help?

Okay, I am at whits end. I have a 2003 windstar with around 180000 miles. I seems to have a trans problem however it is not throwing any codes. 99% of the time it seems to function properly. It seems to have a problem down shifting out of OD some times. It seems to get hung and for lack of words studers/jerks like an old ten speed bike tring to change gears and not adjusted properly. If you give it a little gas it seems to help it and it finds its gear and all is good. It also does the same thing under hard exceleration for example getting on the interstate. The tach does not move when this happens so i do not believe the engine has a mis. I replace the speed sensors and the studers/verks have softened. This only happens some times and if I lived in a flat place I do not believe i would ever notice it.

Last thing this has been happing for at least two years with no codes and knock on wood it has not failed.

Thanks for your help.

When was the last time the fluid and filter where changed??
To get codes from the tranny you need a transmission code reader, a obdII scanner will not get you trannny codes..

Re: Windstar trans help?

Hi Thanks for your reply.

I had the trans fluid and filter replaced actually 1 year ago yesterday. It may be due for another service. However the last time we had it done it the problem got better, but never went away. If it is the fluid may be they did not completly drain the system. IfIi was to do this myself in my drive way what is the best method to drain the most fluid out of the system?

I regards to the trans codes I have read the O/D light will flash if a code is recorded. The O/D light has never flashed. Will trouble codes be recorded with out flasking the O/D light. This is what I have read so I may be way off.

Will the testers Advance, Auto zone use for there free testing read transmission codes?

Thanks again for your help.

Here is a video on how to remove all the old fluid and replace with new.

Personally I would add some SEAFOAM TRANS FIX, run for a few miles then replace the fluid. I use the seafoam product on a dodge van that would not shift into gear and after a few minutes the tranny worked great.

The scanners at autozone, etc. do not read transsmission codes. You need to have someone with a tranny capable scanner check for codes.

Re: Windstar trans help?

It may depend on the code or the particular scanner, but I've had Autozone read transmission codes on my '96 Windstar. I also have a scanner that I purchased from Autozone, and have read codes from my transmission on several occasions.
