Engine Surging

My 1997 Explorer with a 5.0 will surge making the the truck lunge forward unexpectedly.If i drop it into neutral the RPMs drop right down

Welcome to the forum!

How high is the idle when it lurches? If you have your foot firmly on the brake pedal, does the idle speed cycle, or does it just randomly surge? What is the idle speed when in Park or Neutral? Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Did this just start to occur after some event, such as an oil change or tune up?
