1998 Dodge Caravan A/C Compressor chirp at idle and squeal at higher RPM
I have a 98 Caravan with the 3.8 (220K miles). I have a noise that is coming from the A/C Compressor, it is a chirp that develops to a squeal as the engine is rev'ed. It makes the noise constantly and does not change if the clutch is engaged or not.
Does this sound like the bearings in the clutch or the bearings in the compressor? What would be the best way to check the condition of the bearings? Can I run a jumper to clutch to engage the clutch with the engine and the serpentine belt off? Can I get a shorter belt and just bypass the A/C.... |

Re: 1998 Dodge Caravan A/C Compressor chirp at idle and squeal at higher RPM
Are you sure the chirp is coming from the A/C compressor? I especially doubt it since there is no change when the clutch is engaged. Also, if the bearing was going bad it would sound more like a grinding noise.
I suggest it is the belt or tensioner that are bad. Those 3.3's and 3.8's are notorious for squeaking belts. |
