01 Rodeo start problem but good battery

Turn the key on my Rodeo and nothing, then turn again it starts. No sound like it's even trying to turn over on the first try. Sound like the starter giving out, or something else? Second question; where is the starter on this thing? can't seem to trace it down from pos cable.

Re: 01 Rodeo start problem but good battery

Probably bad solenoid contacts. It's on the drivers side under the exhaust. If it's a 4x4, you'll need to unbolt the motor mounts from the frame, remove the drivers side mount from the engine, lift the engine then slip the starter out. All this can be done by putting the front on jack stands and removing the drivers front tire.

Check your battery connections and grounds first. Put a test light on the small wire on the starter and have someone turn the key, if it lights up without the starter cranking, you have a starter problem.

Re: 01 Rodeo start problem but good battery

Clarification for total novice; I don't have a 4x4 so is removing motor mounts and lifting the engine still necessary to get to the starter? also, is it possible that there is a problem with the starter relay since it makes no sound when turning the key once but second time turns over? Sorry one more thing, can I use the test light anywhere besides right on the starter itself to make the check you suggested. Probably dumb questions but i need to ask. Thanks in advance.

Cat covered it very well.

If you are a 2x4 you should be able to wiggle it out.

Start with the battery connections and then it is probably time for a new or used starter.

To eliminate the relay being defective, locate it with your owners manual and simply swap it with another relay that you know works. In my experience, relays rarely fail especially in a car this age. Also, no, you shouldn't have to lift the engine. Starter should drop right out without a front differential in the way.

Re: 01 Rodeo start problem but good battery

This happens regularly on my wife's 03 Rodeo. Turn the key and there is not a sound. Turn the key another time or two and it starts and runs fine for weeks sometimes till it happens again.
