Transmission issue

i was coming home from running errands today and in my effort to move out of the way of a turning school bus, my transmission made a sound that can only be described as a train wreck. i went to drive home and the tranny whined like a cat being skinned alive before returning to normal operation, after which it would only shift after shooting to 3000 rpm. i drive a 2001 olds bravada with the 4.3L engine. im sure i destroyed something in the tranny because now the truck wont move when i put it in reverse. it will go into all the other gears fine, but reverse is the same as neutral. i dont have the money or time to try and rebuild the tranny, so a replacement is my only option. i stay in southwest ohio and i need to know what i did wrong and how hard its going to be to get my tranny replaced. any and all info is as always, very welcome and much appreciated.

Re: Transmission issue

It doesn't look good but I don't believe you did anything wrong.

Re: Transmission issue

While it's apart, you might as well have them change the transfer case lube to the GM AutoTrac II blue fluid to head off those problems.

I still haven't gone with the blue fluid, Is it advised for the 92 with the all mechanical Bosh transfer case too?

Re: Transmission issue

yes i will certainly take measures to prevent this from happening again because its costing me a ton of money for the truck to not be running. a friend of mine told me it could be the sun shell(?) and i should buy a stronger one and have it put in place of the oem shell. is he blowing smoke or should i take his word?

Re: Transmission issue

The sun shell is indeed the usual suspect when reverse goes. And the one you want is called The Beast.

It's a real problem, the sun shell broke twice on mine but they had well over 100k miles on them. An $1800 repair last time. The shop only warranties them for 30K

Re: Transmission issue

Even on our 4L60's?
What's a rolling reverse? Mine always rolls when in reverse.

Re: Transmission issue

As in, don't put it in reverse while it's still rolling forward. Screws up a tranny in time.

Re: Transmission issue

Really?
I'm sure our best ol' buddy Eric wouldn't do that.
Are there other ways to frag the thing?

Re: Transmission issue

The stock sunshell will frag itself given time. It's a matter of when, not if.

That's why the Beast exists.
