Turn Signal problems

I have 1998 Blazer 4wd 4.3L and just last week replaced my multi-function switch and for a couple days all the problems stemming from it seemed to be gone. The "blinker fuse" as I call it has stopped ALWAYS clicking, my windshield wipers do not switch speeds at randomn anymore and for a couple days my signals were working properly again.

But a couple days ago the turn signals started malfunctioning again. Sometimes there is a long pause between when I signal and the lights start blinking, sometimes it comes on for a blink or two and then quits. There is definitely a problem here.

I have from what I believe (I am 2nd owner), a factory tow package, and yesterday when I tried to hook the lights up for my trailer I couldnt get anything but low voltage on the turn signals, No brake lights and the Hazards wont work. (this has been happening since before I replaced the trailer wiring, btw)
I am 99.99% sure that the wireing on the trailer which i just red-did a few mths ago is NOT the problem, when my Dad uses the trailer with his vehicle or friends use it w/ theres the lights on the trailer ALL work fine.

I may have two different problems here, but if any one else has had problems with signals or the Mods cant point me to a couple threads that have covered this issue b4 I would appreciate the help

Re: Turn Signal problems

Foregoing the trailer wiring, it sounds as though the 'blinker module' might be the problem... might be worth picking up a new one to rule that out. Failing that there may be a wiring problem in the turn signal bulb wiring causing the blinker to act erratically.

Re: Turn Signal problems

I know I dont have the terminology right, the "blinker module" I refered to is the fuse that created all the clicking noise behind the glovebox due to my malfunctioning Multifunction switch.

Is that also refered to as the turn signal fuse or is it the 4-way?

I think I may have a ground wire issue, I realized I have a tail lightbulb out but that will probably only solve the "fast" blinking left turn signal, it wont fix the problem I am having with them working correctly all the time. Im still suspecting my problem is a ground issue becauseI tested out the Hazards the other day.
I drive for a few miles with them on and they are doing the same malfunctioning the turn signals are doing.

Im lost on the trailer lights. I checked out the wires going to and from the plug and they are ok..all the contacts are ok...I even unbolted the plug from the bumper and sprayed a bunch of dielectric grease in the back where the wires go in at...maybe when I solve the turn signal issue this one will fix itself, but I hardly ever get that lucky

Re: Turn Signal problems

Yeah, I can't remember what the correct name is for the blinker thingy either. However, the module behind the glovebox controls the flashing of the turn signals and 4-ways. As far as I know, all our trucks use a mechanical blinker, so it should be making a clicking noise... that's just the sound of the relay opening and closing.

You are correct that the blown bulb is responsible for the fast clicking.

I would replace the bulb and the blinker module (should only be a couple of bucks) just to be sure they aren't the problem before trying to hunt down a ground issue.
