Damaged tilt wheel mechanism
During the last repair of the tensioner pulley, the garage gorillas somehow damaged the tilt wheel pivots. There's play right-to-left and specifically at the 10:00 position on the steering wheel. It appears someone put a lot of force on the steering wheel to push the vehicle into the garage (the engine and power steering were out.) I see in the shop manual there's a Jacket Support Assy and a Tilt Head Assy where the pivot pins go through. How best to fix this problem? The steering wheel in clunking and chattering as I drive over road features. What a bummer.

You need to get into the column and see excatly what's up. The support may be broken, support bolts may just be loose, or the pins may have backed out. If you plan on doing it yourself, follow your manuals instructions as this repair has proven challanging to some. I have had several vehicles towed in because people got in over their heads on this repair.

Who pushes on a steering wheel to move a car? Why didn't you make them fix it?
Why didn't they drive it in? All they had to do was remove the belt..... Unfortunately, you will have to take it apart to find what's wrong, as previously stated.....remember you are dealing with an air bag and a clock spring......so know what you are doing(get a manual) before you do this....you will need special tools.... By the way, I loved this model of the Riv.....these things flew with a SC'er, and still got good mileage....but it was the ride that was great.....no squeaks/rattles on this baby.... Too bad it didn't have a four door version.....GM tried to help Olds with the 4 door Aurora......but limited the Riv to just two doors.....would have been a big seller for Buick if they did....dumb move.....

Been there. You'll have to dig into the dash,
 Remove the upper column housing:  Manufacture some bushings:  Press them in place and reassemble:  There are few options on this type steering column.

Loose Tilt Wheel
The vehicle will be going into the shop this week for tightening of the tilt mechanism. It's really annoying and chatters in my hands while driving. Fortunately have a 3-volume Service Manual for that series and have some scans to post. Here are some clips of the tilt wheel..       I'm sure the mechanic knows all about how to do this already!!  -Ed
