4L60E Surging

Hello,

I have the 4L60E transmission. I am having a surging problem with it. I can control it with a bottle of lucas for a few thousand miles however due to a fairly large leak into the transfer case the lucas dilutes when adding new fluid and by the time the fluid leaves the transfer case it's pretty dirty so it's never added back in.

I will be pulling the transfer case off to replace that seal, and hopefully not the output shaft. and i might as well fix the transmission too while i'm down there.

My questions are: Does this seem characteristic of a worn pump, or torque converter? I feel like I am leaning to the torque converter because the transmission still shifts flawlessly, other than a 1 to 2 hard shift which is eliminated by adding the Lucas. It seems to that the torque converter is trying to stall the engine on ocassion when it is first started too.

Describe the surging a little more?
Like in what gears/hot or cold/engine surge/or transmission slipping/or just transmission surge.
Make sure engine is runnuing good for transmission to work good.

A transmission capable sanner and a transmission pressure gauge will show transmission problems in data read out and transmission pressure loss.
Watch data for slipping and shift time and pressure lose when surging.
Was it checked for transmission codes with a transmission capable sanner?
If adding lucas helps it sounds like you have internal transmission pressure problems.
Does it act up when transmission is full of fluid?
Is the filter and fluid in good condition?

If you are going to pull transmission out it will be a good time to give it a complete rebuiold or replace it.

Re: 4L60E Surging

The surging generally occurs at a fairly heavy throttle. More noticeable in the lower gears. It's not a lack of fluid slippage. It seems to be a varying load on the engine. Engine runs good. I notice it seems to do it more when hot.

The filter is in good shape, no abnormal metal in the pan. The fluid is constantly leaking into the transfer case so it always looks and is fairly new on the dipstick. I am draining about 5 quarts every 10,000 out of the transfer case. When I top it off I really don't notice a difference. Although adding the Lucas makes a substantial difference.

The codes were checked through grounding A+B.

Sounds like I need to get it pressure checked at the transmission shop.

Thanks again,

Mark

You are welcome..

Yes and have them put a transmissin capable scanner on it.
You can not get all transmission info and codes from a A&B JUMP.

Surging is sually engine running problem.
Engine has to run good for transmission to work good.

If a bad flud leak to transfer case it may have been run low on fluid urning clutches.

Let us know how it goes.
