Exclamation Speedo died...

Oddly enough, lightning struck my house several months ago, and the next day the speedo and both the odometer and tripmeter ceased to work. The only motion in the speedo occurs when bringing the car to a stop and the last downshift causes a slight jolt on the needle.
The tach works great, and I've worked out the speeds with another vehicle as a guage, a habit I got into when I used to drive an MG Midget with the same problem.
I know there are three possibilities: The harness behind the speedo is loose or damaged, the sensor on the side of the engine(passenger side) has gone kaput, or the third(oh no...) the sensor and origin of the signal located between the tranny and motor is kaput. The last option means a future of drive-by-tach, cause removing the moter and tranny to replace a $15 part is NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
Anyway, if anyone has a similar speedo problem, odds are caused by a different event, maybe I can do a little more investigating and eventually solve this problem.
GPS, anyone?
Oh, yeah, it's a 99 aurora... same as any other 99 Aurora, I guess.
