02 Vulcan power steering pump noise
Pump became noisy at 102K miles. Replaced w/Pep Boys lifetime guaranteed rebuilt. Followed all their installation instructions and pump buzzed and hummed for 2 months. Took back and got another, still noisy. Pep Boy tech tells that people "just live with it". Now hearing that noisy P.S. pumps are an overall Ford problem. The OEM wasn't. Ford dealer wants $102 for one of their rebuilt units, told me they are better. Don't feel like living with it and with all the effort involved to do one of these jobs I don't feel like playing with them.
Any advice or experiences would be appreciated. |

Re: 02 Vulcan power steering pump noise
dont buy a new pump, drain power steering fluid yourself with front end jacked up, replace fluid with ford type F tranny fluid, bleed system by turning wheels left to right and noise should stop or almost stop. one thing is, ford uses plastic gears in the pumps, most bulk steering fluids or hydraulic oils will make these pumps have a whine to them. these pumps were designed years ago a ford stuck with the plastic gears, which do fine with the right oil inside them. the run really quiet with old ford type f tranny fluid in them

Re: 02 Vulcan power steering pump noise
Schaff,
I did the procedure you recommended Saturday morning. No change, still buzzing and humming. |
