is this supposed to be empty? 2002

I have a 2002 grand caravan sport 3.3 6cyl I have a check engine light code po456. So after looking around these forums I started looking under the van checking the lines. Should this spot have a hose coming off or something?https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlink it is next to this box https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlink

Re: is this supposed to be empty? 2002

That big box looks like the canister, my '03 does not have that little thing next to it, otherwise I'd tell you if something was there or not. It looks like nothing was ever connected to it, because of the consistency of color. If it had a hose connected to it at one time, you would notice a difference from where the hose was as compared to the rest of the unit. P0456 is a small evap leak, if something was supposed to connect to that thing and fell off I would imagine is would set off a large evap leak code. I would look for small cracks in those hoses. If you can't find any try another gas cap. or maybe even your gas cap is fine and it wasn't tightened all they way the last time you had it filled.
Good luck.

No, there is not supposed to be anything connected to it. It is basically a vent. My 2002 has the exact setup with that being open.

Here is a video explaining how an EVAP leak is troubleshot using a smoke generator. It shows the likely leak points. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSn0ljUS6kI

Re: is this supposed to be empty? 2002

You can use cigar smoke to blow into the Evap system!

Caution - Keep lighted cigar away from the Evap system and car, gas vapors are very
explosive.

It's probably worth $80 for diag to pinpoint your Evap problem.
Suspect bad rubber, plastic, or seal.

1) Check the rubber seal around your gas cap 1st, it has the most wear + tear.

Another common leak spot is under the airbox, the evap lines.
