2005 Grand Prix Steering wheel replacement

I have 05 GP and i want to replace my leather steering wheel its worn. Anyone know how to remove the airbag do I need any special tools also I see the 06 and up wheel is different it does not have cruse build on it. Can I use the 06 wheel and use my own craze switch on it I see them on eBay really cheap.

Re: 2005 Grand Prix Steering wheel replacenment

There should be a cover or covers at the back of the steering, that's where the airbag holding nuts are located.

Please BE VERY CAREFUL when removing it, you should disconnect the battery for 15 minutes before you start working on the system. The airbag should be stored facing up and whenever you need to handle it always do it with the from facing away from you.

Always make sure the wheels are in the straight position and you note the position of the clockspring (the wiring that connects the horn and controls to the steering column), if you install it in a different angle you might damage it.

I don't know if wheels are interchangeable, hopefully another user will comment on it.

Oscar.

Do you have the radio/CD controls on the steering wheel?

Re: 2005 Grand Prix Steering wheel replacement

Is there a big difference in the way the steering wheels look on the '04-'05 GPs versus '06 and up. Mounting wise it should be the same. Not sure electrically since I only have '08 GM wiring diagrams. Send a PM to Richtazz and he can double check for you to be sure.

Re: 2005 Grand Prix Steering wheel replacement

Electrically speaking the wheels won't match, I just checked the diagrams and even though the audio controls have the same color keying, the cruise controls are different, for the '04-'05 they are mounted on the steering wheel while in the '06 are mounted at the multi function turn signal lever.

Sorry that I didn't think about it before...

Oscar.

Re: 2005 Grand Prix Steering wheel replacement

Good research Oscar. Glad you had the time to do it. On my '08 GXP the cruise controls are on the stalk.

Re: 2005 Grand Prix Steering wheel replacement

I've uploaded the diagrams for you to see them, I don't think you'll be able to rewire them, the 05 GP uses the BCM and PCM for the cruise control to work. 06 GP only uses PCM and depending if you have the 3.8L or 5.3L the system uses 2 or 4 wires...

Oscar.
