A nice tutorial of a hinged door..?

As the topic says I am looking for a nice tutorial of a hinged door on a car. I have seen tutorials of lambo-doors etc. but no really good of a normal door on a normal car. I have seen some really nice project here with some open doors and I was hoping some of you guys could help me with some pictures of your projects to help me out?

Best regards,

Rickard

Re: A nice tutorial of a hinged door..?

Hmmm, hinged door tutorial. That sounds familiar somehow. Didn't we have a discussion about this in another thread recently?

Let's find out! A quick search of "door tutorial" should do the trick!

And what do you know- we did beat this topic to death, just a few short months ago!

Gotta love that search feature.

I was about to warn Rickard, but it looks like I was a bit late...

Re: A nice tutorial of a hinged door..?

now now Andy, this isn't the same question that racer93 asked...
besides, AF's search is still very hit and miss when it comes to it pulling up threads or not.

one of the tidiest I've seen is Alex Kustov's as seen here except it isn't 100% accurate to the real but the important thing there is how he made his hinges.

the difficult bit is how to get the door to swing into the body like a real car does instead of swinging out as a die cast tends to.

another method is seen here but not that clearly i'm afraid.
essentially, the hinge is a styrene tube cut into three sections with the top and bottom section fixed to the door and the centre section attached to the large flange piece you can see. A metal rod is used inside the styrene tube (sections) to complete the hinge and the flange is fixed to the body.
As for filling in the missing door jamb detail, that would depend entirely on what car/kit you're building and what materials you're used to using to doing body mods.

Re: A nice tutorial of a hinged door..?

I recall the other thread degenerated into a problem about answering such a generic question. I personally tackled hinging doors by breaking such a large problem down into more bite sized pieces:
How do you cut out body panels?
How do you fabricate a hinge?
How do you mimic the articulation of the prototype?
How do you fabricate missing detail parts like door jambs, weatherstripping...?

After acquiring the skills to tackle each of those problems I found I could develop a hinge for any door, hood, sunroof, engine cover I wanted.
