Please Help!

Bought an 01 windstar earlier in the year. The transmission went out so I had it replaced. Every so often the Od off light flashes. Every time I take to the Tranny shop and they check the codes. It's the same every time, it shows a torque converter clutch error.

The shop has replaced the transmission and torque converter twice and checked everything still it keeps throwing the codes.

Also I have had the same ABS/Brake light issues as everyone else with a windstar. Now on top of everything today I had the engine light came on, however when they checked no code.

It is unusual to get a Check Engine Light (CEL) without any code.

The transmission shop needs to make good on their waranty on the transmission......
Have them flow test the transmission cooler(s) if they have not done so already.....there is at least a cooler inside the radiator assembley and they can become clogged or restricted.......causing insufficient fluid flow to cool the transmission.
FORD has a TSB out about this.
Also....maybe they could change the Transmission Range Sensor.....aka Neutral Safety Switch.....high failure item......as is the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)....which is what the speedometer is connected to.......located about the middle of the back side of the transmission....above one of the catalytic converters.

The ABS light.....FIRST thing to check is the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder.....it needs to be FULL to the top of the FULL line.
Even slightly low can trigger the Brake and/or ABS light.

the brake fluid was low so I filled it. Third time starting it up and the abs/brake lights came on.

U said the third time the ABS/Brake light came on again? Is the brake fluid level still at the full line? In, otherwords has the light come back on because the brake fluid has leaked in some way? If so, you most likely need to change the brake pressure switch which is connected to the bottom of the master cyclindar ......... don't worry it free since Ford recalled it. Have them do it.

If not, there are other issues that can cause the ABS light to come on......

Don't know if anyone else has seen this but I found it on the web so I thought I'd post it.


The issue of the the ABS brake light is critical in that the ABS brake system does not function as designed by Ford. The issue is caused by HEAT in the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) ECM (Electronic Control Module) (2C219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ECM which is attached to the ECM main circuit board at all points. The expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. The code most commonly scanned by professional mechanics is code c1185. Seen by us owners as a Yellow ABS Brake Light.



I had no problem with the ABS/Brake lights coming on all winter but now that the weather has warmed up the problem is back so the above post that I found makes sense. So now I am looking to replace the abs module with a new one or have the original rebuilt.
