Car Similar to Subaru Impreza or VW Golf

I'm 16 and getting my first car soon, and I have it narrowed down to either a Subaru Impreza wagon or VW Golf, I need my car to be a 5dr to fit my hockey bag inside, and I'm a goalie so I have a huge bag. The years I have been looking at are '00-'04/5. BUT, I want to expand my options a bit cause I know used car availability varies. SO, my question is are there any other cars out there in a similar style to the Impreza or Golf, the hatchback or small wagon style?

Mazda3 has a 5 door version. It is very reliable, runs well and looks pretty sharp.
