rumble strips

I got a 2000 cargo 136000 when i hit 60 and over not all the time but random... like when you run over the grooves on the side of the road. thought it was the tranny but the trans shop said it was fine working the way it was suppose to. I have never felt this in a vehicle before so i am clueless..

Re: rumble strips

Could possibly be a bad universal joint. Rear U joints will typically cause a vibration near 35MPH. Front joints around 70MPH. The best way to check them for binding or looseness from wear, is with the driveshaft removed from the vehicle. Here's a quick way to check them for being loose without removing the shaft: Raise the rear wheels off the ground and put jack stands under the rear axle near the shock mounts. Put the transmission in neutral, engine off. From under the vehicle: rotate the driveshaft until one of the front universal joint crosses is horizontal. Grab the driveshaft close to the joint and try to move the joint up and down. Rotate the driveshaft 90 degrees and do the same thing. There should be NO movement in the joint. Do the same thing for the rear joint.

Re: rumble strips

With 136,000 on the odo, the idler arms are probably shot, and I would check the ball joints as well. These trucks are not kind to front end suspension and steering parts. Get "Moog Problem Solver" replacement parts for any item that is out of spec, and don't forget to have an alignment done after replacing any parts. Grease all the fittings at each oil change. (I do oil changes, lubrication and injector cleaner every 5,000 mi. Next oil change is at 307,000 and truck is still going strong.)
