1.9L Timing Belt Specs (1993)
My '93 1.9L had a loose timing belt so I tightened it up. It now makes a 'whirring' sound and I think it may be too tight. My 'incredible' Haynes manual has a diagram of it that says "check tension here" but it doesn't say how much play it should have. Does anyone know how much play there should be on the long stretch between the camshaft and flywheel? By the way it is running perfect at 316,000 miles

Re: 1.9L Timing Belt Specs (1993)
I don't have a book that tells the deflection. Last time I put on a timing belt I just left the timing cover off so I was able to measure the amount of travel at the center point of the belt between the cam sprocket and crank sprocket. Mine measures 1/2 inch and that's the amount of tension using the spring loaded tensioner pulley. My belt is probably stretched out a little bit so maybe 3/8 to 7/16 of an inch would be better. 316k on your Scort. Wow, that's a lot of miles. You must be doing something right.

Otherwise buy a belt tension gauge. http://www.uktools.com/ Search timing belt tension gauge. Facom makes them. |
