Question STi or EVO

Which one to buy? 2004 WRX STI or 2003 Mitsubishi EVO.

Based upon the current magazines reviews (Road & Track, Car & Driver, Automobile, etc.), they like the EVO more than the STi. I believe the STi accelerates faster in a straight line but perhaps loses out to the EVO in the handling department.

Any opinions are welcome. Thanks.

Dealers are killing the Evo with their stupid mark-ups, but there is a waiting list for the STi, so it depends on which you would rather do, pay the money for an Evo, or wait for an STi.

Personally, I think you will be better off with the Impreza, I like the Lancer, but if I had to choose it would be the Impreza.....can't explain all the reasons right now, but after driving both I think you will understand.

Question EVO vs STi......

well finally now the evo is out and the sti is almost out and quite a few magazines have got the chance to drive then both in their final version and compare them

the consesus seem to be that the evo even though is has more power its got an edge on handling - at least ona dry track while the sti has more power which is delivered very smoothly but this only gave it a negliglible advantage in drag runs

the final conclusion of all the articles was that the sti is more practical since is more tame so its better for everyday driving but the evo has an edge as a more pure sport drive.

what are your thoughs on this....please do not bring other cars in this comparison...its straight sti vs evo.

don't say this comparison was done before because they had other cars into the mix. i just want to see a starght comparison between those two.

evo vs sti debate, from my view....

hey all, ill do a quick introduction before i get started. i dont want to sound partial since i work for mitsubishi (bloomington plant -eclpse, galant, endeavor). i dont own one of the cars we make and dont plan to, not that i think theyre junk or anything, theyre just not for me.

now comes along the EVO- finally. i will buy this car, but not right now. the dealers here in central Il. have marked them up $5000 (not as bad as some places) but as of today only 2 have sold in this area and the dealers are dropping the markup since the cars arent moving. when this happens ill get to use my discount and get one for $26000! i just gotta be patient.

i crawled all under and around this thing, and this car is for real. no bs, everything on it serves a purpose. ok, the on the fly headlamp aiming might be a frill.

now, i love subarus and have drooled all over the wrx since it debute. now that ive examined the EVO, i might be jumping ship.

how does it stack up to the STI?
271hp vs 300hp- well have to wait and see how well the scooby puts it power to the ground. the wrx doesnt do it very well at all, it loses 60hp between the crank and the wheels. the EVO loses 30 by the time it hits the ground (240 wheel hp).

the sub site lists its weight as identical to the EVO- industry translation- the STI is heavier and theyre trying to figure out what to do about it.

the EVO comes with standard recaro seat (which are super sweet btw) STI doesnt mention anything.

subaru has a 2 gallon larger fuel tank.

evo, enkei 17x8 wheels- sti, bbs 17x7.5

evo is taller, longer and wider. but sits lower.

sub has .8cu ft larger trunk

sub has side air bags

evo has hieght adjustable headlamps

evo has rear wiper

evo has standard fog lamps (opiton on sti)

sunroof available for evo, none for sti

evo has 4 cupholder, sti has two (who cares?)

sti has rear heat ducts, not avail on evo

cd player standard on evo, option on sti

warranty is basically the same, exept for the rust warranty is still basically the same- a play on words that mean nothing.

ill go see thi STI before i purchase but from what ive seen so far my $ is going to the EVO. it looks much better (just an opinion) and car for car i like the EVO better, so far.

one gripe for both of them.... at $30000 why cant we get a boost guage standard?

i'm undecided...

they're pretty equal overall... but i think i like the STi...

but i've seen the evo in person, and it's gorgeous...

i guess i'd go for the exclusive, and go for the STi...

If I'm not mistaken the New 2.5L STi is going to eat the Evo 8.

I'm pretty sure claimed HP is ~300 with equal torque, plus it's got a lot of interesting little things that if they're executed properly will help give it an edge.

eat is not the correct word.

in 1/4 and 0-60 times it's quicker, but what about on a road course.

the evo is quicker in the slalom... check out www.autoweek.com they did a couple articles on them... they're closer than you think

from what i her the evo will be produced in less numbers so i say it will be the more exclusive one- if that is what you meant.

well as far as test went they are neck in neck both in 1/4 mile and in 0-60. i believe the sti is about .1 faster on average which means nothing.

also on normal road courses the evo its better. there was no test on gravel courses or even wet ones - maybe the lack of fancy ayc will hurt the evo - guess will see soon.

so as flylwisi said eat is way off the mark

It took Motortrend 4.5 seconds to 60 MPH and 13 seconds through the 1/4 mile in the EVO. The STI did it in 4.7 and 13.3. The EVO also beat the STI in the Slalom by a few MPH. So from what I've read the EVO is the better performer.

I have never been a fan of the WRX, it was never that good looking, and it never really performed that well. While the STi is a better looking car than the WRX of old, I don't see why I should pay $35,000 for the STi when I can get the same 1/4 mile performance and better road holding from the less expensive and better looking EVO. I am sorry but it seems that the STi just fell flat on its face. I’ve heard all these Subie fanboys crying about how the STi will murder everything. There was so much hype and this is how it turns out. Give me the EVO any day of the week over the STi.

It seems the EVO is more practical. It has a smaller engine, performs equal in the 1/4 mile, performs better on the track, looks better, and costs less. Also, it manages to have an airbag in the Momo wheel, how cool is that?

Looks to me like the 4G63 is back on top.

Tiff Nedell did a comparision on the two cars. You can find the video on Kazaa... he went with the Impreza (although it was the STi...).
