Re: Exhaust Manifold...

Check vacuum hoses over the engine. there's usually a vacuum diagram under the hood. One good trick is to remove 1 hose at a time and see if the engine changes rpm, or runs different. if it does, that's good. If not, then the line is leaking and needs to be changed. What you're doing here is creating a known vacuum leak on each connection, therefore the engine should start running worse. If it doesn't, then it's clear the line was already leaking and is in need of repair. I think the leak might be around your MAP sensor someplace. (Just a guess)

Re: Exhaust Manifold...

I really think the 2 problems are related. The vacuum leak is causing the engine to suck too much air on a fast take off and lean out, or is causing incorrect MAP data and slightly flooding out the engine. However, we can't rule out the transmission as the cause of that shake, so try a test... take off slowly and let the tranny shift into 2nd, then, as soon as it does, punch it hard... if you get the same thing we can probably rule out the tranny. Is that a 4 speed auto in there?

Re: Exhaust Manifold...

Rumble.... like a clunk noise? that'd be a motor or tranny mount. Makes me think that way as it seems worse when you take off fast. Does it do it when you hold the brake and shift into drive? (but don't hit the gas or start moving) Don't feel so bad, "drivability" problems are the worst to fix. Oh, if the engine is giving you trouble this is the best solution:

Re: Exhaust Manifold...

Almost forgot... this might make you feel better... I just found out the Fiero convertible conversion kit I wanted to get is gonna cost $3300.00+shipping. and on top of that I have to paint the damn thing. And let me tell you, spray guns and I don't get along.

Re: Exhaust Manifold...

I was going to say the the loose plate sounds like the balancer is falling apart, but you beat me to it, lol.
My Beretta did that, too, now that I recall, but I smoked the head gasket before it became bad enough to notice. I caught it starting to fall apart when I pulled the motor apart. Scored up a cylinder, warped both heads, all that antifreeze in the oil pan totally f*cked up the crank journals, so trust me, you don't have it so bad...

I do have better news- went to check out the 86 Fero I spotted, guy put it up for sale last fall at $500, since then it's manifested a fuel injection problem (running rich-how's that for irony?) and sprung leaks in the clutch line and brakes- I offered $200 and he took it, should have the car home by this time next week. Now we can complain together!
