The way I see it, if it brings corporate investments to NZ, makes the rest of the world aware of NZ, and bringing positive publicity to NZ in general--it's a good thing.

It was shame they actually got all of those oscars. Although the oscar for best actor didn't go to LOTR, it didn't go to Bill Murray, who certainly deserved it.
Anyway, anytime a movie takes home a large ammount of awards from the academy, you know it's worse than good, it's Titanic good. :P

The academy awards consist of an electoral college of various folk 'involved' in the film industry - hence it's the "academy" of motion picture arts and science.

In terms of best actor, Sean Penn is one of Hollywood's best actors although his win was a little surprising given that he doesn't usually turn up to any of the other awards. Bill Murray, Sir Ben Kingsley, Johnny Depp all had stand out performances this year so all deserved nominations.

Don't have a problem with the supporting actor, actress or best actress.

As for the clean sweep of all of the categories for which it was nominated - LOTR: ROTK probably reflected the trilogy as a whole, the vision shown by the folk involved and the massive amounts of funding pumped in by New Line this year for publicity and lobbying academy members. If you had the box office receipts that New Line has accumulated with the three movies, then the best investment you can make is to electioneer for the Oscars to pump your DVD sales into the future...

Call me cynical but that's how any smart business person would do... I certainly would.

More thoughts on the Oscars.

1.It's good to see some of the ebullience returning to the ceremony,the last two seem to have been a bit drab and minimalist,for obvious reasons.

2.Given that there are now so many new categories,it would be interesting to see how a film like 'Ben Hur' would perform under similar circumstances.

3.It's amazing how quickly wee Keisha was swept under the red carpet when she failed to bring home a statuette.How fickle the New Zealand press are.

4.Please don't get me wrong,I admire the work of Peter Jackson....but only as far as I admire the work of a good plumber.I pay him to entertain me,he does it well.end of relationship.

finally,I agree,publicity like this is good for a small country,but only for a limited time.It'll cost a few million and another couple of blockbusters before New Zealand becomes more than just another fleeting trend of the film industry.

25,000 people worked on those 3 movies, and thats not counting the surport of government and local industries. About 99.9% of them were kiwis.
The movies were shot entirly in NZ, useing totaly localy devloped special effects, sets and props. There were written, directed and produced by Kiwis.
They were written by a man who had only one purpose, to entertain and share with the world a very special and very rare talent for turning visions into a reality we can all share.
Now go and watch some of the other Weta workshop films and try and tell me that money was a motivating factor in thier production.


As for making films in NZ, there is quite clearly a future for it, and the success of the LOTR, and the last samuri can only help secure it. It is good for NZ, with the rise of the kiwi dollar and the damge done to farming recently we need all the over seas currency we can get. The last samuri pumped over 100million dollars into the Taranaki region alone, LOTR millions more into other parts of the country, and who knows what other big budget films can be made here, all of which providing a totaly positive spin off.



Now if all you want to do is whine and moan about how sad and pathetic your own life is then go somewhere else.
