Not to be mean here, but.....Kinked210 did not get on you about the spelling. he is the one that posted the question. Kicker1_solo is the one who commented on your spelling. He was not the one who asked, or as you put it "your the one asking if it was possible to turn a sohc into a dohc." As I said, re-read the theard. kicker1_solo commented on the spelling, and he is not the one that asked. If you want to flame back, at least get the facts your flaming with in your post correct. Claiming he's the one that asked, etc...only serves to make you look a little less....well....you know...

Re: Any way to turn a SOHC into a DOHC?

Nothing personal guy it is possible to put a dohc zc head on a sohc d series block. You just have to redrivee a hole or 2 i believe, but the oil passages line up.
But the question is it economical, NO, if you want dohc get a dohc engine!!!!!

hold on dont let this thread die. at first i wanted to swap my d16y7 for a gsr motor but ran into a problem. i live in cali, we have crappy rules on swaps and smog shit. my hatch is '97 and my motor that i got is '94. i wanted to make it a legal swp but cant. so i decided to go turbo on the stock motor. but i want to squeeze the last piece of power out of it. i want to make it dohc or sohc vtec. i swapped all of the wiring harnesses from an ex (except the engine harness) because i made my hatch have power windows. so it would be easier to make it sohc vtec. i know that the zc head would fit, its possible. but i had a question. would the head off a 89 integra fit? since they have a d16a1 motor. if no one knows then i will have to make this my project. and if anyone knows where i can get a cheap turbo or the whole kit holla at me. email: [email protected] or (916) 952-4148 thanx

H.tek do you know anything about ls/vtec's? i had a quick question cuz mine isnt running that well.

Yeah, the reason your motor isn't legel is it's older than the car. YOu really can't legelly put a motor older than the car into the car in any state, though some you can get away with it becasue they really don't check. In California though, if you try and circumvent the rules, your SOL.

As for making your SOHC D16Y7 vtec, that's just a commen "mini-me" swap (the sohc d-series equivelent to the ls/vtec). You don't have to go mess around looking for an 89 teg head, and then fitting it, etc. Just put a D16Y8 Vtec head on it. It'll fit, just like the B16 onto an LS. The mini-me" conversion is quite simple, and that's the head commenly used on your motor with this conversion, the Y8 head. That would be the easiest route, a "mini-me conversion" and then a turbo @ a low boost setting. Howver, since you already have the 94+ GSR, why don't you sell it, take the $$ and buy a 97+ GSR motor. You need a motor and ecu that are OBD-II, and the 94 is OBD-I. At the very least, you'd need an OBD-II ecu running it all (even in another state). Your car is OBD-II, so you need to keep it wired up as OBD-II. As I said, not matter where you are at, even if you could stick that motor in your car, you'd need the OBD-II ecu; you'd need to wire it all as OBD-II.

nah man, the sohc vtec is nowhere near as powerful as the ls vtec. the ls vec, with stock internals, puts out 183 horsepower to the wheels. a sohc vtec only like 100, even if that.

and i knew about the obd thing its just that i was too lazy to type it. but another question, if i drop a second O2 sensor and a obd II ecu will i be able to use the motor? or make it legal? i know ill need a wire harness converter from obd I to obd II, and i have an extra cat from a gsr that i can use so i can make it work if i can make it legal

No, not at all. I never said nor implied that. I think you misunderstood it. WHat I ment was this. An LS is a non-vtec motor. Putting a B16 head on vtec's the motor. Lots of people have an LS, and they do this to get a little extra kick in power the vtec brings. That's the same reason people do a "mini-me" conversion. They have a non-vtec SOHC motor, and want a little extra kick it power the vtec brings. So they swap the head. A DX motor is 100HP @ the flywheel, and a mini-me should put it around 120 or so @ the flywheel. Just an extra kick thanks to vtec. What I ment was the IDEA is the same...the "mini-me" conversion is the SOHC idea of an ls/vtec. The base idea is the same, not the power output. The power is nowhere close. Just the idea behind what is being done is the same...and what is being done in both cases is taking a non-vtec block and throwing on a vtec head to add the extra little power the vtec brings. That's all. Do you understand what I was saying better now??

I am not sure if that will work in california. Even if you went and got all the senosr equipment and wired it too look like and work like an OBD-II, I don't know. I guess it's partiallyhow they check the age of the motor...do they actually check the vin or something, or do they just check to see if it's obd-II, like the car. I don't think it will work in cali though, but you are check it out as I am not sure. I know it will work in some other states that arn't nearly as strict though.
