Every year they bring out new rally car kits, and every year I buy the new releases....
I know what you are all saying about the mail them idea....but it was just that, an idea 98% of the models I have are Tamiya, the ones that aren't are Hasegawa, and the only reason I have some Hasegawa are because Tamiya hasn't produced any reasonable kits of the Lancia's. I have a couple of Revell AG's to get the 1/24 F1 cars, but everything else is Tamiya.....so I am buying their product. Are you telling me more people are building rally kits than are building touring cars? I see more touring cars on here than I do rally kits, so what does that tell me? If there were more touring car kits we would see more variety at least.....instead of all the Sard & Toms Supras, not to mention the Pennzoil, Calsonic and Clarion R34's going through......do you see what I am saying? More eye candy Don't get me wrong, I love seeing them all, I can see the same kit built by 5 different people and everytime I see it I enjoy looking at it. Is there any way we can get Tamiya to expand their touring car range without having to commit to 30,000 kits? How about Sony offer a free kit with every PS2? j/k Ray

That's probably because you live in the U.S., where touring cars aren't that popular. I mean exposure to the public through tv and magazines are always leaning toward NASCAR, CART and Indy. And more importantly, the focus of the media is the drivers, not technical features of a car. In-Focus that "Racer" has in each issue is very rare, but in Japan, those technical reference photos are everywhere, and usually photos are bigger than that of drivers. (Thus, we have a magazine like F1 Modeling or World Rally Collection.) And Rally and DTM subjects sell in Europe very well. Problem Tamiya and all other manufacturers have is the total sales of plastic models were taken by other pastime, such as computer game. So, Tamiya is capable of making those subjects, but the plastic model division don't have enough people to work on multiple subjects. These days, I buy two of each Tamiya kits, I'm interested, but that won't help. We just have to draw more people to car modeling. (sigh...) |

Hiro,
I totally don't get your point. I live in America but follow all the racing via the net and on TV when I can, I don't watch much Nascar and I only recently moved to America. I know rally and touring cars are popular in europe.....do you know how jealous that makes me.....the forms of racing I grew up on and I can't watch much of it, because 'Speed Channel' wants to show Nascar, even in the 'off-season'. The models I was talking about seeing the most of, I see on here, the area I live in is very barren when it comes to modelling, I think there are only 2 of us in the city I live in that build rally models at all..... Although 953k3 lives close to me......about 1-1/2 hours away. I use the net for all my reference material, because there is nothing available here. Ray

Just look at the WRC section on AF to understand the WRC "is not living" in the US - sorry Freakray, but you're probably the exception to confirm this.
When Ales or myself, do a new thread we get replies from Belgium and The Netherlands, 2 countries with a strong Rally history. Of course from other continents as well but not as many. The other day one was asking what the co-driver is for - go figure, no offence to that person, but it indicates how well known it is in some areas. In our local hobby shop the piles of WRC kits are sold out in a minute, The touring cars however, well they don't sell this well. I prefer Touring over WRC, but still like 'em and will build occasionally one. We just have to make sure that we get as much as possible new people into car modeling. Lately 2 guys at the model club (12 and 15 year old) started making cars instead of planes, guess what they do, right WRC.

Just an idea.......... What if Tamiya was to start marketing car kits from PS2 games like Grand Turismo 2? You could make some great box art, and that way there would be an interactive element,........ make your model, then race it in GT2? Sound cool to me. Is there anyone on this forum who had built a model of there favorite GT2 car? |

Fooesboy; you mean like the initial D franchise with fujimi?
yeah should be cool... I must admit, that before I got the first Gran Turismo game on playstation one, back in he days (1995), i didn't know much about japanese cars. I kinda disliked them, thought they were all alike, econoboxes with small engines... That is , untill GT 1&2&3! A whole new world just opened up! I mean it, I got to know all the cars in both jap/euro names, learned a lot and now I have even made cars that I knew from the gt-series! (lancer evo 3 (GT1), stratos (gt2) and R34 (gt3). So all of you guys who say thet racing games have a bad influence -for the model car hobby ,that is- I guess you are wrong, games do also have a great educational value to them!My two cents.... ciaoo Olivier |

In fact, I do it in both directions. I make models of cars I like in GT, but I also buy cars in GT based on what models I have to build... It's nice trying out colors and wheels. ![]() In fact, my GT2 garage very closely mirrors my model shelf.
