Re: Toyota86 Wide Body kit from Hobby Desgin

It's like most who comment here, I don't like how HD are copying parts from other (it sure looks like it), but did anyone took a look at eightyone parts for the S2000? the Mugen hood and hard top? They look identical to the old Scale Auto Style parts from a while ago. Even Chris, the ex-owner of SAS submit the point on Eightyone FB page.... I must admit that they offer to collaborate with Chris when he raised the flag tough...

HD might be the evil copy cat here but they are not the only one's doing it....

P.S. I don't have any relation with any of the companies mention above (HD, Eightyone or SAS) apart than being a customer.....

As for the P/E, thats not a big deal, I dont really care for P/E all that much
You can buy/put different wheels if you dont like it that came with the set. I seen other people put same rims like the picture of HD look pretty good.

I know I can buy different wheels, that just adds to the cost , and I have a hard time spending $100 plus on a $30 model kit more, but thats just me.

Oh well

Re: Toyota86 Wide Body kit from Hobby Desgin

Does anyone know where I can get the 1/24 Enkei Rims for this kit? I am planning to get the 81 kit but don't like the rims that come with the kit. If anyone could help point me in the direction of a similar style of rim that would fit this Tamiya/81 kit.

Thanks

EDIT: Seems eightyone will be selling the Enkei Rims seperately.

You might also want to look at wheel sets from Aoshima and Fujimi. I would take styrene wheels over resin any day.

Re: Toyota86 Wide Body kit from Hobby Desgin

If I were you, go for HD one. Is way better than Factory 81, and if you still want the factory 81, I got a friend willing to let it go. And in case you didn't go to classified thread, I letting go Factory 81 Bensopra GT-R too... I will never buy another Factory 81 kit...

I not sure how many of your Factory 81 Bensopra share the same faith as mine... this is the stuff that I can't accept especially with expensive price tag on it.

I want my money back! Come to their new LB Lamborghini, hope is better or it will never improve. As for me, I rather save my money on HD Lamborghini LP670-4 SV full kit. cheer...

Did you ask for an exchange? AFAIK they outsource their casting, maybe they missed that batch.

Okay now I'm more confused. Everybody said that 81 has better quality and etc. than HD. Now other person says HD is better than 81. Be more specific and explain why so I can understand better. Stop throwing off guys.

Re: Toyota86 Wide Body kit from Hobby Desgin

I know a lot of members love Factory 81 and hate HD just because some bad experience with their inaccurate transkit. I do have bad experience too, like their SLR722GT, or even the R35 GT-R open door transkit, or Audi R8GT. But they indeed improve by listening to customers. Upgrading their skill in built, not perfect, we are the modelers and I have to say their nothing is perfect in scale modeling, that's what make us keep improving our skill.

Even the worst HD conversion kit does come with some decent resin kit, photo-etch set, decals and the most important thing - instruction sheet.

Factory 81 Bensopra GT-R kit - when I got this kit, I was so happy to see it on my hand, and when I opened it...my disappointment drop all the down to the floor. This so called resin is a poly-resin with bad quality casting. (this type of yellowish, translucent resin was original for prototyping. It is very hard, and easily break apart.) Then there is a bag of engine parts that originally cast from Aoshima engine, with lots of flaw but this time, this engine parts was cast in high cast grey resin. Now, why does small parts can cast in high cast resin and the body can't? Worst parts should be this... there is no instruction sheet provided. I email my seller, they told me there wasn't a instruction sheet... WTF! The picture had show you the 'don't give a shit' attitude to buyers... those completely off parts should never process casting.

Stock R35 GT-R run in 20 inch wheels, and this only provided a 19 inch that cast originally from Aoshima wheel and the disc rotor is obviously belong to Tamiya. HD WALD R35 GT-R conversion set come with a 21 inch wheels... and is so much better than this.

I only able to say luck is not on my side when I bought this set. I don't blame the 3rd party shop as I believe they also suffer, pain in the @ss to sell it too. My friend PM them in their FB page asking why his set doesn't come with decal, and the reply is "decal sold separately." When I ask my friend what is the number on his box, he told #52/200 where mine is #55/200, but with a decal inside. I not here to upset anyone still got high faith in Factory 81, I just hope Factory 81 could really improve their skill before sending out to sale. Is really unfair to buyers to pay top dollars for crap, and I do believe there are lots of them which have the same faith as me, bought it but disappointed, walk away in silent...hope to forget about it in time.

Just my point of view, or maybe I just a noob in such advance conversion kit.

Re: Toyota86 Wide Body kit from Hobby Desgin

Well I don't have the R35 transkit so I can't speak for it. I do have the 86 transkit, just received it last week, and I am very happy with it.

The body parts are cast in white resin, not the same stuff they use for the intercoolers and wheels. It's not brittle, in fact it is on the soft and flexible side, and is definitely workable. The casting is crisp and clean, with no bubbles or pinholes, and minimal flash. Fitment of the parts is good, they require minimal cleanup, and fits nicely to the contour of the body.

Don't really care for the TE37 they included, they are nicely cast but totally wrong for the car, but the SSR mesh are great. Probably better to make the wheels and tires optional and reduce the price a little.

No instruction sheet, but then it is not too hard to figure out how and where the parts go, it is a rather straight forward kit. The only tricky part is the need to have the fenders trimmed around the edge to fit the flares, which I will touch on later.

There is definitely room for improvement. The casting tabs on the fender flares are my biggest issue. They are not easy to remove, I don't know if it is production consideration but they have them at the thinnest edges of the parts, and the tabs are far thicker than the body parts they attach to. You will have to plan ahead how to cut them off without damaging the fender edge, not hard, but not convenient either. Having them on the inside edge of the wheel arches and thinner than their attachment points would be much easier to cut off. A template for trimming off the kit fenders would also be nice. There is a post with pictures on their Facebook on how to cut off part of the fenders to fit the flares, but no mention of it in their kit. One should be able to figure that out during the dry fit stage, but an instruction sheet would be very helpful.

I am willing to cut them some slacks as they are a very new company, they started operating from last October? They are bound to make some mistakes. I think most of their QC problems stem from the outsourcing of their casting, particularly with their earlier releases; they seem to have it under control now. The other issues on this particular kit are minor, and overall it is nicely done and does not exhibit those problems as seen on the R35 kit above. As for the copying of parts, I guess they have learned their lesson, and I'd expect them to design all their parts themselves as they move forward.

I'll probably tell them how badly those parts are reflecting on their reputation, they should be able to work something out. They seem to be reasonable people, it's probably just the language barrier. It might take a couple tries to make it clear across.
